CPU usage spikes to 100% for a split second then goes back to normal

Hi,

First time on a forum but got an issue with my PC that I can't solve, first thing the system:

intel i5-3570k CPU (not overclocked)
Geforce GTC 560 SE (not overclocked)
8 gig DDR ram
Standard HD (not SSD unfortunately)
Window 10 (had windows 7 with the same issue)

For some reason my machine was working fine but now when I play any games (online or offline) at some point the CPU spikes usage spikes to 100 which freezes the game and I have to restart. Sometime I get the 'driver failed and has recovered' notice but not every time. I've tried the games on highest and lowest settings doesn't seem to make a difference. Games currently tested on world of tank, world of warships, Company of heros 2, DOTA 2 and Diablo 3 has the same issue with all of them though diablo 3 seems to be able to carry on unlike the others.

What I've done:

Cleaned the inside of dust to ensure it isn't a heat thing
MSI afterburner says the CPU heat doesn't go above 40
GPU temp also within comfortable parameters
Fresh install of everything (including windows)
Drivers all fully up to date
BIOS is latest version
Played with the bios activating all the extra stuff it can do and then reset to factor settings.
Scanned for viruses none
Got Malware and scanned - none
Don't have loads of programs running in the background

Nothing seems to have an effect, I play the games for a bit and it'll spike then freezes games. It's beginning to get very annoying and I can't seem to find a solution. Any help is much appreciated!

Hello, firstly welcome to toms hardware. If you ever have any questions about anything to do with computers just ask. Remember, no such thing as a stupid question.

What PSU do you have? it may be a lack of constant power causing the spikes to crash the system.

If your psu isnt the problem it may be time to update the graphics card as that is getting a bit old now. your CPU should be fine unless it is a malfunctioning unit.

Just because the CPU is at 100% before the crash, doesn't mean the CPU is the cause...

The driver error is probably graphics driver error, right? By restart do you mean the computer got stuck and you had to restart it, or just the game. I guess the computer.

I'm guessing the graphics card could be the cause. How much the temperature of the card is in Windows, and have you checked how much it raises in first few minutes of playing. You might try to lower the graphics card clocks. I think Diable III is the graphically least demanding of the games you play so that might be the reason you are able to play that, and nothing else.

Are you using some overlay program that displays info on the GPU and CPU, try disabling that. The "spike" you see, is probably an artifact of crashing, and not real spike in CPU usage.
