Can't connect to servers without using a VPN

So lately, I've been getting this problem where I get disconnected from games. At first I just occasionally got disconnected from servers when I join, but then it started happening more and more until I was no longer able to connect to any server. I was going to reinstall the game but then I realized that I have this problem with all games. Even in cards against humanity I kept having problems.
I came to the conclusion that this problem may be on my ISP's side. But then yesterday I found out that if I used a VPN, I can connect to servers with no problems other than lag.

Does this mean it's not on my ISP's side? Is there any sort of malware or virus that could be causing this?

Most likely the ISP. In most cases home networks use some common IP scheme (192.168.X.X or 10.0.X.X etc.), so 99% of the time when you use VPN you be assigned a NAT address from a DHCP pool that is assigned to whatever VPN profile you use, just depends on the VPN service. I would say whatever IP you have that is being presented when you are getting disconnected is being black listed or something of the sorts.

It's not possible for my IP to be blacklisted from everything though. Is there no type of malware/program that could be doing this? Because I am aware there is malware infested somewhere in my computer. Otherwise, it's my ISP, right?

Actually it is possible, though unlikely. It really depends on what you are doing and the games you play. If everything you connect to is hosted by say the same company and they have you blacklisted then it would affect everything they have. As far as malware/spyware, yes there are some that can do this, if you suspect this is the problem you can run some anti spyware tools and an antivirus to see if anything pops up.

Probably the best thing you could do is pick one of the servers you want to connect to and try contacting that systems administrators (or whatever customer support they have), and see if they can help you with some troubleshooting. If your IP was blocked/banned from a server that should be something easily found.

What I mean is this issue is not in one company's program, and there is no reason for my IP to get blocked. I also ran adwcleaner and the issue still persists. It doesn't make any sense why I would only be able to connect using VPN.

If you have another PC that you know is clean and working properly you can test to see if it can connect to whatever you are wanting. If it does connect I would think the issue to be with the original PC. If it doesn't the problem could be router, ISP, game servers, and anything else in between.

If you know the IP address of the server you are trying to hit you could run a trace route or a pathping to get some more details.

For traceroute and pathping from command prompt do... where the "x's" represent the IP address. Let it run then look at the txt document that will be dumped to the root of C:\ this can give you some basic info on where you go and potential hops that may be having the problem. Just a note pathping can take up to 10 minutes.

tracert xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx > c:\tracert.txt
pathping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx > c:\pathping.txt

Like I said this doesn't happen on only one server, it happens on everything. Several steam and Origin games, This would mean that the issue is either my computer or my ISP, but I do not understand why I would be able to connect only using a VPN.

In a nutshell VPN takes encapsulates and tunnels your traffic securely. Almost all of the time the IP address that the receiving end will see will not be the same that you would have without using VPN. So if the address from an ISP is blocked, VPN can get around this because you will be presenting the receiving end a different IP address (assuming it's NAT'd). It may not even be the ISP but one of the hops between the ISP and Servers. That's where things like pathping can help. If the data goes... you-->ISP-->generic hop1-->generic hop2-->Steam but times out at generic hop 2 then that's where the problem is.

Have you tried Steam from another PC on the network? That can tell you real quick if it's your PC.

I do not have another PC to test it out on. Also perhaps I should mention that I can connect to the servers, but after a few seconds I immediately get disconnected.

Out of curiosity can you bypass your router and connect directly to the internet and give it a try?

How do I do that?

I guess it will depend on your setup. At my house I have a DSL modem from the ISP connected to my own router, then my PC is connected to the router. If I were to bypass my router I would plug the DSL modem directly to my PC.

I am unsure of how to do it on my setup. Update, though, I have managed to connect to some servers, despite the connection being very weak and also almost getting disconnected several times. Upon rejoining the servers I have had luck with, however, I get disconnected.
