Hey guys.
I have recently upgraded my graphics card to a GTX 970.
I had to make some uh... physical "adjustments" to my case to make the card fit. But I made it work.
My main problem is the heat. I tested it by running Ark Survival Evolved on High (Which is the suggested setting for GTX 970) and the fans all of a sudden go nuts.
I checked the monitor and the card was running at 80 degrees. Obviously this game isn't optimized very well but it was running perfectly except I figured it was maxing the card out.

Anyway..

I have a 120mm fan on the side of the case. An 80(I think)mm fan at the back which I am pretty sure is exhaust. I noticed last night though that the fan on the front of the case (which is also 80mm I THINK) isn't going (Probably a lose wire, haven't had a chance to check it yet). I will assume that this fan is intake.

Is there any thing else I can do to help air flow?
The fan on the side of the case, should it be intake or exhaust?

Solution

You don't need all the fan slots covered. Just make sure you have intake(s) for you cpu and another for your gpu, along with a way to exhaust the hot air. It can be done without get all the fan slots filled.
I'm not an expert on "quality" fans, but I can recommend you look at the AP line of fans from Silverstone. They are quiet enough and I like how they focus the airflow in one direction.(they do lack "oomph" when using air filter, just fyi) There is also the Noctua brand, which I've only heard how great their fan's build quality is and how quiet they are. (while expensive, they have a "redux" line that is...

Decided to get a new case. It's been ordered. In Win G7. Lots of room. 7 fan spots. Recommended by Conbrio Technology and used by them for their Insite gaming machines in New Zealand.

You need to feed that card some air, so with the new case, you should add another fan up on the front as intake due to that HDD cage being in the way of the pre-installed fan. Two fans are ideal, regardless that one may suffice. My Strix can hit 61-62 while playing BF4 on ultra@1080, and up to 67c when running 3D mark benchmarks. This is considering I only have a single fan for it's intake and my room does get warm-hot at times. (I'm planning to add a second fan soon, just waiting to purchase rubber fan mounts first)

Just know that more fans == more noise. If you do go with a lot of fans, find an fan controller you like if you care about the noise. Also, I recommend rubber fan mounts. Most annoying noise maker for me was the vibration my case made due to a 140mm fan I have.

I suppose I could always just get 2-3 fans and put them in and see how the temperature looks and the noise. If it's quiet and still has room for improvement then I may aswell add more but I can always do that later.

Whats a safe temperature I should aim for? CPU and GPU.

Current games I'm playing (Single 1080p monitor) are GTAV on the absolute highest possible. A bit of World of Warcraft on max. Divinity: Original Sin on max (Not exactly very heavy but still) I am planning on playing Star Citizen eventually on max. It runs very nicely as it is which is good. I play a small amount of Borderlands 2 and Pre Sequel on max.
I think that's about it at the moment. Oh and Eve Online.
