I've quite recently installed Windows 7 64bit on my desktop and when my computer is idle for around 15-20 minutes, it makes a single noise which I can only describe as a churn, (not a clicking noise of any kind that people mainly seem to post about) then my hard drive continues to make noise as if installing/processing something. I've tested this out at least 10 times and this singular noise only occurs at the idle point in the 15-20 minute region and immediately stops within 1 second of moving my mouse.
I found an 'idle hard disk' option in the Power Options of Control Panel, which by default was at 'turn off 20 minutes' which I was fairly confident this had solved this issue but it hasn't.
Before using W7 I had used XP for years and never experienced this idle issue, any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Hey there, LAYZER!

I'd recommend you to test the HDD's health and check up on the SMART data status using the manufacturer's diagnostic tool. This way you can be certain that there's truly nothing wrong with the drive itself. You should be able to find such a utility on their official website.

I guess it's probably a good idea to check how the drive will be working in another computer as well. Here's a link to quite a few abnormal sound/noise examples you should take a look at: http://datacent.com/hard_drive_sounds.php

Hope it helps! :)
