Hello lovely peeps of toms hardware !

I have had an ongoing issue with most 3d games I play except psychonauts for an example of the issue I am talking about see the link right below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z07Hs1duaJQ

Things I have tried
#1Switching out the gpu with an old crappy 5450.
#2Messing with aa settings in CCC "It only helps the issue in hearthstone"
#3 Reformatting
#4Messing with in-game settings

System specs
Amd phenom ii 945 Black
R9 280x
8gb DDr3 1333 Mhz
Rosewill capstone 750w gold non-modular

Thanks for replying!
I wish it was that simple but I have tried that already I figured you would have known that by
"Messing with in-game settings" sorry should have been more descriptive.

i assumed you did but i needed to post that because it is buy far the first culprit.

Try running your games in 4k, assuming you have a 1080p monitor Nvidia/AMD allows you to play up to 4x your monitors native resolution. It looks great and I play almost every game @ 4k. It will really test your system even without AA it will clean up what you're talking about.

Some games look fine @ 1080p with none to some AA, but for the ones that don't still, 4k will help.

I do not think this is a matter of resolution when I am running 4x msaa this should not be an issue at all at 1080p.
I have seen youtube videos and this is not normal.

Try it, seeing is believing; 4k with no AA looks a lot better than 1080p 4x MSAA in games like GTA5 and every other game really. I've gone back and forth quite a few times and would be able to tell the difference every time, even distant images are sharper.

By better I mean less jaggies, especially on long straight lines instead of seeing small triangles on a straight line, you see a nice crisp line. Old games also look a lot better @4k, that's how you know it's doing the job.

I have to record for youtube there is no way I can handle 4k files if resolution was the issue which I would think that if it was not as severe I would change it also why is everyone else who plays gta at 1080p not facing this issue at all if resolution was the problem.

With that being said I do agree 4k is sharper you are absolutely right about that but I do not think it is the best solution for my issue. I might post some gta v comparison video so you will get the issue I am facing you can also google it I am not the only one having this problem.

Thanks for replying!

I have a r9 280x sapphire duel-x older BF4 model. It very well could be something to do with my monitor or maybe the bios ? I use duel monitors I game on a samsung syncmaster bx2231 and the other is a basic lcd tv.

You cannot see anything from the video I originally linked like any flickering on the buildings etc?

not really mate no, youtube is never good for showing fine stuff though.

go in to your monitor settings, make sure screen aspect is set to screen fit if possible or wide if not.
it defintiely should not be left on auto

then open catalyst & post a screen grab of your scaling tab.

do you suffer the same problem if you game on the led tv??

That video is using very low settings which is a big part of the problem. Shimmering/Jaggies are quite bothersome to most who have an eye for detail.

The real issue is the game engine, game settings and the resolution. With 1080p and lower resolution to scale it only magnifies the issue.

4k/AA helps a lot but doesn't fully solve this. Some people go crazy on their builds so they can use grunt power to iron out some of the graphical issues we see or if a game engine has inefficiencies.

I wanted to share this with you because it also bothers me and am sharing what has worked for me.

I did not know they were running that on low settings well I am pretty much maxing most games out settings wise and it's still and issue. I might try 4k once I get a new cpu and see if that solves the issue.

Thanks for trying to help!
Do you think maybe trying to run them at a less taxing resolution like 1440p would help ?
Hmm no wait I only have a 1080p monitor crap!

I forgot to check to see if the 280x has VSR which allows you to go up to 4 times a monitors native resolution and it doesn't, I thought you had an option that wasn't there sorry about that.

I'm sure a real 2k monitor will help, my 1080p monitor doesn't seem to sharpen in less I use the 4k DSR, even the resolution right below that looks like 1080p, this may be a NVidia issue but it does force me to use 4k DSR, if possible I can lower the resolution to scale if the game has it, but you can't lower it too much or the magic goes away fast.

4x resolution looks better, but has nothing to do with his problem and doesn't fix it.
It's got nothing to do with his monitor.
Anti alias is not the issue either.
What you think of youtube is irrelevant.

I have no solution for this problem, but am searching for it too, and it gets really annoying with these answers, that only show that people don't understand the issue.
