I'm not 100% but I think your CPU is a socket 1155 and your motherboard is a socket 1150. I could be wrong but at the same time your listed 2600k and a 4790k seem to be about the same price, but the 4790k is clocked at 4.0. The ram should be fine, but I would make sure you go for dual sticks and not a single stick. The GPU should be fine, I haven't used MSI, but the 970 itself isn't a bad card by any means. Coming to your storage, I wouldn't run your primary storage on a USB drive. Personal preference, I would snag a 120GB Samsung SSD to install your OS on and maybe a few core games, and buy an internal HDD for all other storage needs (pictures, music, games you only sometimes play or that don't NEED super fast loading).

On your price point, the CPU change is about even. From what I can google, the HD you have listed is about $129. Going off of that, a SSD would run you between $70-90 and a HDD (1-2TB) should be between $50-75, so that's only a few dollars more. Don't eat pizza for a week or two and you should be able to make that work.

You can save a few dollars on the case. you dont need a full tower. Something like a Corsair 330R or NZXT Source 210 will be fine.

The power supply could be improved. the CX models have gone down in quality. They are currently ranked as a Tier 4 power supply ( 1 being the best and 5 being the worst)

I would suggest a Seasonic S12G or a Rosewill Capstone Power supply. As for 750, you really dont need that much juice for what you have listed but it is good to have if you have plans to upgrade later, adding another GPU or overclocking your system will make good use of those extra watts.
