About a month ago my graphics card overheated and would no longer work, my computer would not even POST when I had it plugged in however after ordering a new one which I put in today I cannot produce anything on screen but all components appear to be working from fans and lights, it also POSTs now. I'm not really sure where to start with this one as I literally don't know what's happening in the computer because I cannot access the BIOS. I have tried both HDMI and VGA with no success. It may be important to note that I have no on board graphics so starting it with no graphics card is also quite pointless. Any suggestions of what may be causing this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Specifications:

AMD 8320 processor
Nvidia 820 graphics card
Corsair 500w power supply
Gigabyte GA-78LMT motherboard

Try booting into Windows' Safe Mode - see this link

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7

You don't have to see anything to get there. Note the instruction to simply hold down the F8 key until the screen comes up.You MAY have to use the VGA connection for this - I suspect Windows' default driver that covers "all" situations uses only VGA output.

Safe Mode does NOT load all device drivers and gives you a simplified system. I think that includes the video card driver. So if this works, you'll be able to get running in Safe Mode. Then you can un-install the driver for your old video card and maybe reboot to be sure, going into Safe Mode again. Then run the proper Install process for the driver(s) of the new video card. (There may be a utility on a CD that came with the card for this.) Once that's done you reboot normally, then set up your video card as you wish. This is probably when you switch to HDMI connection.

Thanks for your reply unfortunately no luck, still no on screen display. However whilst examining both the new and old graphics cards I noticed something that could be an issue. I noticed that my old card had some areas which my new one doesn't do you think this would cause a hardware compatibility issue?

The smaller card (newer one) has no slots for the cables that are labelled PCI-E. When plugged in to the motherboard the fans still spin so I'm unsure if the slots for these cables are necessary or not.

It looks like you haven't got the GPU connected directly to the PSU. You need to ensure that the PCIE slots on the top of the GPU are connected to the PSU. The PCIE X16 slot on the motherboard is only the data lines, and most modern cards require much higher power requirements.
