Ok so I have just arranged a new computer for a friend. I suggested a Lenovo E73 think centre however I have upgraded it a bit so this is the completed build as it stands is this:

Lenovo generic 180W PSU
Intel Core i5 4460S Processor
1 x 4GB DDR3 kingston memory module
1 x PCIe ASUS R7 240 2GB Graphics Card (no additional power required)
1 x Crucial 250BTX SSD (Main Hard Drive)
1 x Caviar WD 500GB Sata Drive (Additional Storage Drive)
1 x Lenovo DVD/CD Burner

Running Win 7 Pro 64bit and a AOC 24" Widescreen monitor (also brand new)

I am concerned that the 180w PSU will be too low, that being said the system runs ok however its not been used in 'anger' yet ? By my calcs the total power consumption assuming everthing is running at full whack with no USB devices plugged in other than Keyboard & Mouse is about 145w

Does this sound about right ?

For the record the machine will not take a ATX power supply so upgrading is not an option. If required we can unplug the DVD and additional SATA drive - I reckon that would save maybe 20-30w

Advice please ? He is planning on using it as a new office PC with occasional CAD editing with ArtiCAD - He did not want to spend much cash hence the Lenovo as it was on a good deal also he has been using Intel HD 3000 on a laptop up until now so whilst the GFX is entry level I am hoping it will make a decent speed boost to rendering projects, As I said I am just concerned about the power consumption ?

Advice please ?

Your calc sounds right however the stock PSU is not very efficient and they deteriorate over time. TBH you are running it on edge and as heat builds up it may start to cause issues. Could be a little while though but its going to wear out a lot quicker, and you will see that by increased instability.

Ok given that I don't really have an option (I can't turn around to him and say sorry its no good) would it be best to take out the extra SATA drive and disable the DVD drive ? Would that keep it running for a while ?

That would help, as long as he doesnt use the DVD drive though probably not much to worry about, but the extra HDD will draw a bit. I mean it should work fine as is, just don't expect it to last forever...
