Direct X 12 - AMD Fury X Crossfire or Nvidia 980ti SLI

So in light of the boost in performance Direct X 12 has on the AMD cards, I find myself again contemplating Crossfire AMD Fury X or 980ti SLI.

I plan to run a multi-monitor setup (which I hear AMD is better for) or single monitor at 4 and I also hear AMD has better scaling with multiple GPUs.

I haven't seen any articles with benchmarks for this particular setup with the Ashes of Singularity yet (a Direct X12 title). I've seen plenty of benchmarks between Fury X and 980ti though.

Any input/advice is appreciated. Thank you.

Single 980 Ti and 1440p G-Sync display? Seems to be the gaming sweet spot right now. If you want multiple displays, it really doesn't matter. Dual 980 Ti's will be faster but Fury X's will run cooler and quieter (barring any coil whine). 4K is cool but not worth it if your are looking at a 16:9 28-32" @ 60Hz, in my opinion. However, an ultrawide like either the Acer Predator XR341CK or X34 IPS are probably where I'd look to in order to avoid the "nuances" that multiple monitors bring with them.

I'm more concerned with moving forward and Direct X 12. Check out this article. Notice the huge gains AMD has with a Direct X 12 title.

Thanks for the input though :)

Yeah I've read that article, its a benchmark from an alpha. It really doesn't say much of anything for DX12 going forward. Their is alot of fancy stuff going on behind the scenes in that title regarding CPU threading and GPU workload balancing but I'm not convinced of anything DX12 yet.

DX12 promises an awful lot and we've yet to see any real performance gains, only promises of them. Not to mention none of the high profile features have been tested or even shown, features like shared VRAM and unified GPUs. I would wait it out to see what the first AAA DX12 games bring to the table. DX11 took a LONG time to get going and DX12 promises even more.

If you are more interested in DX12 going forward, I would not sink big money into a Fiji/GM200 rig. You will have to wait awhile for DX12 features and Pascal will most likely be better suited for the task as the approach for high performance hardware in the future seems to be "big bandwith HBM2 and multigate FinFET". Stacked VRAM and XPoint memory is going to be the future. Not DDR4, GDDR5, and a skylake.

All very good points so thank you! Looks like I picked the wrong time to build a PC :( But then again, when is there ever a good time because technology is only moving onward and upwards.

I'll have to make due with what is out there currently though. I've waited months already to see what the new AMD cards would bring and was slightly disappointed. I plan to have my rig ready before Fallout 4 and Battlefront. I'm still leaning towards Nvidia because like you said they are a little faster. Wouldn't mind the cooler system with the AMD though....ugh...the struggle is real.

I hear ya, I don't mean to discourage you. I think DX12 has a lot to prove yet. I just built my newest rig and plan on keeping it a long time. You do get excellent DX12 support with the 9xx series and AMD 3xx and Fury/ X series. But if you are planning on upgrading to the latest and greatest, next gen will always likely show up before you expected/wanted.

Well for one there is lot of hype with DX12. Right now i would not going to think too much about it. Of course we want our hardware to fare better in the future but the thing is we can't be sure what future will bring. For example those with AMD 3k and 4k series was supposed to be future proof when tessellation being included in directx spec. But in the end how that turns out? In AoS AMD card hold the advantage due to GCN Async is better than nvidia Async. It might be like that forever but not all DX12 games going to use Async as well. Just like not all DX11 games available today have tessellation in it.

In the end, all you can really do is build for today and plan to upgrade the GPU in 2 years. DX12 isn't likely to be in most games until then anyway. So don't plan to buy a video card for 3+ years out, as that is almost never a good idea. Plan for today, and worry about the future when it comes.
