Hey,
My friend is looking to get a gaming/workstation pc. He is going to be learning some architecture, and needs something good to run the programs. He will also be playing games on it 70% of the time, possibly more, if his interests change.
The programs he will be using are "AutoCAD, Rhino, Adobe (from research, I'm guessing it's Illustrator/photoshop and Autocad architecture, but IDK for sure)". He doesn't know much more than that.
Workstation gpus look too expensive here. eg. quadro k4000 = $878, 980ti = $795. From what I read, Rhino and adobe programs support gaming cards quite well. I'm quite worried that some programs will not work with a gaming card though. So gaming gpu or workstation gpu?

Here is what I'm looking at:

To minimize time, heres the information template:

Approximate Purchase Date: hopefully within a week. ~August 21st

Budget Range: ~$2000 Canadian dollars with monitor and speakers. After Rebates; After Shipping. Quite flexible.

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming (~70%), Architecture/design, and probably normal web browsing+ homework.

Are you buying a monitor: Yes, preferably with built in speakers

Do you need to buy OS: Yes.

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Any Canadian website on pcpartpicker is fine, I can get free shipping to store for NCIX.com and can pick up from Memoryexpress.com.

Location: Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Parts Preferences: Wants a low profile (preferably chicklet) keyboard, the razer deathstalker. mATX may be better if not overclocking. <500gb ssd. Friend currently uses 300gb of his 512gb ssd in his laptop. i7 over i5.

Overclocking: My 3 top choices: Xeon E3-1241 V3 3.5ghz(like i7-4770 i think): $339, i7 4790 : $379, i7 4790k. It looks like the xeon > 4790, for cheaper. What would you recommend for the use and the price?

SLI or Crossfire: No, because the 980 and the 980ti apparently have better value-performance.

Your Monitor Resolution: At least 1080p. Maximum 3x 1080p monitors.

Additional Comments: Architecture programs: AutoCAD, Rhino, Adobe. Probably won't be upgrading, because in time, dorm rooms will be a restriction. I'm thinking of leaving $200 out just for a quadro k620, just in case he actually needs a pro card. Can you use 2 different cards in one system (eg. within windows, switching to the workstation card to use AutoCad, and switching back to play games)?
The parts I'm most unsure about are the: CPU-GPU-RAM importance in the programs, and the OS. I believe most of the programs are Cpu>>>Gpu>Ram.
And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: Learning architecture and playing games; he wants a desktop.
G2a sells windows 8.1 codes for $27, while windows 10 is $120. Is it worth it to get Windows 10 (because of DirectX 12)? Thanks in advance for any help!!!

Edit: should I get faster ram? Price difference- 1600- $97; 2133- $119.

Easiest way to run some things on one graphics card and some on another is to use separate monitors. One plugged into the gaming card and one plugged into the workstation card. You might not need a workstation card though, my GF does commercial design in AutoCAD, Photoshop, Sketchup, Corel Draw and the like and her PC at work has a GTX 660, low voltage i7 and 32GB RAM. That suggests to me that this stuff is RAM intensive.

Strangely an i5-6600k seems to perform better than an i7-6700k or any other CPU in these types of programs so you might as well go for that:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/skylake-intel-core-i7-6700k-core-i5-6600k,4252-5.html

Seeing as this is a fairly high budget and the software will be fairly RAM intensive, I'd go with Skylake for a slightly better CPU and DDR4 support.

Why do you need a monitor with built in speakers? Monitor speakers sound terrible, you could get some for $50 that would sound 10x better.

That would be pretty decent. According to that benchmark the 6600k is better for those programs than an i7 and should be better for games as well, gets you faster DDR4 RAM (with space for a 32GB upgrade if needed) and a 25'' 1440P IPS monitor. Graphics card is a 970 but they're better value for money in my opinion. That one's superclocked so would give around 3-5% less performance than a stock 980 for $200 less. That wireless card is great as well, dual channel and includes bluetooth.

My humble opinion

Workstation tasks, not all apps can leverage the gpu, and yes for the extra cost in this situation the extra threads are easily worth it.

Umm, thats in USD- which converts to $2685 Canadian.
One thing about the Skylake cpus- Here in canada, you gotta pre-order them, and the estimated arrival date is 1 month for the 6600k, and early october for the 6700k at the least. My friend needs it within 2.5 weeks.
Minor thing: he wants the NZXT Aegis case btw.

Question- Is the $100 difference between Windows 10 and 8.1 worth it?
Again, thanks for the help!

Hey Fooball, there is a new computer store that started here in Canada when Futureshop closed down, they have a no-tax sale going on right now and I think will ship free to Vancouver. Might be worth checking out if you want to save 8-13% off from taxes. They're called G3, and are starting to become a big sponsor for twitch streamers. Their new site doesn't have a large catalog, but if you send them a message, they will still get you parts as long as it exists.
