Hello!

This is the first time I post here, but read some great threads and have gotten a lot of help in the past, so I thought that maybe you could find out what is wrong with my computer.

I have two friends that are VERY good at computers. I am the typical gamer who take 2 hours to install an EVO CPU cooler, so I'm far from a pro, but have gotten tons of help from them. Here is the issue and what we have tried:

I have a custom build computer that was put together in a shop (as I said, I'm not a pro at building). Have had it for 3 years now, with some minor errors here and there, but nothing unmanageable. Since about 5 days ago, my computer started acting up: It would freeze both screens in a static light blue colour (maybe a bit mosaic-ish?) while the sound would be playing as normal in the background. After a few moments (5 seconds?), the sound would become a loud, static, buzz and wouldn't stop. The only way to use the computer would be to hard reboot it; ctrl+alt+del didn't do anything, nor waiting.

After a hard reboot, the computer starts up when I press the power button but won't launch the bios when you'd expect it. A 2-3 seconds after the normal bios would've shown, it shuts down automatically. After that it starts again and repeats by itself, without me interfering or pressing the power button at all (kinda like an endless loop). Sometimes it gives away a beep when it shuts off, sometimes it doesn't.

So far I have:

– Performed a memcheck without any red lines
– Used Event Viewer only to find "Critical Error 41: Kernel Power" which is suppso
– Changed back settings in bios to optimized defaults
– Reformatted both hard drives and reinstalled windows 7
– Changed the PSU for a brand new one
– Tried booting on 1 RAM at a time (wouldn't boot) and in different sockets (have 4, using 2 rams). Blew in them to avoid any old dust.
– Bought new RAM with same result
– Unscrewed my fairly new cpu cooler and checked for lack of cooling paste. There was plenty, only a few miniature spots that weren't covered.
– Checked that all fans are working

My friends tell me that the chance of it being a CPU error is very unlikely, so we have summed it up to most likely be a motherboard issue (hence the place in the forums). I am planning on buying a new motherboard and having a shop installing it since I would most likely take either tons of time or mess something up while installing it and I quite frankly can't deal with more issues at the moment.

Specs:
Windows 7
XFX HD7970 BLACK EDITION
Fractal design define R3 (case)
Intel Core i5-2500k 3.3ghz 6mb
Gigabyte z68ap-d3
Old RAM: Kingston 8GB 1600MHZ DDR3 (2x4GB)
New RAM: Corsair Vengeance LP 8GB 1600MHz (2x4GB)
Old PSU: Deltaco psu-423 Naetdel 500W ATX
New PSU: Cooler Master G750M 750W
Fractal design FD-Fan-140 140mm (3 of them)
Seagate SATA-600 2TB
Kingston HyperX 120GB SSD (can't remember model)

Sorry if unnecessary information, but at this point I can't think of anything but to buy new motherboard or (welp) a new cpu. The PSU and RAM had a 14 day return policy so will return ram tomorrow.

When I tested with the new ram, it was about an 60-90 minutes after the freeze today, and the system wouldn't even boot to BIOS. It had the same result as removing all sticks altogether.

I do all of my work at my computer, which involves both gaming and recording voice/video. I can't last long on my laptop alone, so if anyone has an idea to try out – I am all ears!

Thank you so much in advance, I really appreciate any help.

It looks like the GPU or PSU problem, do you try use the onboard iGPU?
Or try the Bench it - Troubleshooting http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-1753671/bench-troubleshooting.html

Not sure if you mean integrated graphics? I run a Radeon graphics card and don't rely on anything integrated that I know of (might be wrong)?

Something I noticed is that one of the fans on the card makes a weird noice, as if it was hitting something) a few times before going back to normal. When it slows down it makes a sound as if it was hitting a chord or something like that. Nothing is in the way that is visible and the psu chords aren't even close the the fans. I took it off and now the computer is booting up. Could it be an error of the fan that is causing the gpu to overheat and forcing a shut down?

It makes the noise every 20 sec or so a few times in a row. If I turn off the computer the fan stops within a second while the other gpu fan slowly stop over maybe 3-4 seconds. When the computer gets stuck in the loop of turning off and starting up again, it makes the sound just before shutting down.

Thanks for the tip about the gpu!

I removed the gpu and used the igpu. It worked perfectly so have turned the computer in to the shop. It seems like one of the fans of the xfx gpu (2 fans) is broken somewhat, so might be able to replace the fan instead of the entire card. Not 100% sure if that is the actual issue, but at this point it really gotta be; I played LoL on decent graphics for 2h30m straight without any issues on igpu, then put in gpu and suddenly couldn't boot again.

Thank you for the help! Never thought that a gpu could cause a computer not to boot or to freeze the entire system!
