Hey, i made a kali linux live usb with persistance, as described here, and now i still have 8 GB free out of my 16 gb USB, and i'd like to use that for storage. In windows disk management it says 8 GB unallocated, but does not give me the option of creating a new volume. How should i fix it? I want the usb to appear as an 8gb drive in windows, but still have kali linux working if booted from the usb.

Hey there, Clay_.

I really don't know why this is happening and why the other part is not formatted as well and you can see only the Linux portion. You can try out this tutorial: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows. I've tried it with Ubuntu, but the USB installer has the option for Kali Linux as well (just chose Kali Linux instead of Ubuntu when you make the bootable USB). When I've tried it with Ubuntu, the rest of the space available on the flash drive is usable and you can create new folders which you can fill with data. The awesome thing is that you can automatically create Persistence if you need space to store what you work on Kali Linux like docs or other files, just by selecting the amount you wish to allocate for that.

Hope that helps.

Apparently, windows will only accept 1 partition for USB drives, the first primary partition it finds, and if there are none, the first logical partition. And the partition i am trying to use is the third. I will try to find a way to install kali on the second partition

This is true. You can either try what you've mentioned by searching online for a multiboot USB partition tool, or try the other way (which I've mentioned in my previous post). If it works, you'd be using one partition, but you'd still be able to use the whole storage capacity of the USB flash drive, simply by putting your data in newly created folders by you. You'd still be able to boot to Linux Live (at least it worked with the Ubuntu version, as I've already mentioned).

Whichever method you choose, I'd be pretty interested to learn what results you'd get, so please keep me posted.
Good luck!

The thing is i don't want a live os, if i used a live os it would've worked, but i want to use kali linux with persistance, meaning that my files will remain on the usb between reboots, just like on a regular hard drive. If i use pendrivelinux's software, i cannot do that
