A question about Gigabyte motherboards

Hello.

I've been looking to build a budget gaming PC, and have checked out several Gigabyte motherboards, finally settling on the GA-B85M-D3H. However, I noticed that there are several revisions of the board; 1.0/1.1, 1.2, 2.0, and 2.1.

I've heard several complaints about similar revisions of the more budget-oriented B85M-DS3H, in that each revision removed capacitors or replaced them with cheaper ones, lowering the functionality and quality of the product with each revision.

Does this hold true for the Gigabyte B85M-D3H as well?

Yours,
A concerned buyer.

Solution
Yes there is minor difference. For example, GA-B85M-D3H rev 2 and 2.1 supports Haswell Refresh cpus out of the box without needing to flash (update) the BIOS.

Older revisions can support Refresh chips too as long as the BIOS is updated, this sometimes requires using a non Refresh chip first to flash it since the mobo wont boot with a Refresh cpu.

I've not heard about lowered functionality for B85M-D3H revisions. It generally has good reviews (see newegg) and is rated on a tier 1 or 2 on Tom's B85 mobo list.

This is difficult to answer without more in depth knowledge of the model and the manufacturer's policies. However - try to get a detailed picture of the motherboard that you are considering to purchase. You should be able to have a picture in good resolution allowing you to see if the capacitors are indeed - older ones, or newer neodymium (short stubby, all metallic) capacitors. If absolute majority of its larger capacitors are neodymium (most of the boards I picked by Gigabyte have all neodymium caps and are short-circuit resistant) then you're still in for a good buy. Sorry I couldn't be of more help...
