High Disk Usage! Help Please I beg

I NEED HELP QUICK! My PC was fine. Then I started Norton Defrag, and then canceled it. Now my HDD sits at 85-99% usage ALL the time. In the time I right this, it was already 30 minutes! What do I do? It's a completely new laptop my parents bought for me! I don't want trouble!

Please help! I beg!

Ok so I shut down and started up my laptop and it looks like it doesn't stay at 99% usage anymore. It stays under 10% at idle and when web surfing. But am I safe? I mean, can I check HDD health. I'm a little worried here. I probably lost like a gallon of water by sweat after I saw the HDD peak at 99% and stay there. So any suggestions? I'm really worried here. It's a new laptop. I got it less than a week ago!

I have Windows 8.1 by the way

I've never used Norton stuff, but if I were you, I would finish the Defrag using either Norton, or the provided Windows defrag.

Stopping a defrag mid way could leave your HDD in a very poorly optimized state, which will cause a lot of unnessisary disk usage.

Defrag unscrambles your data in essence, and if you stop it mid way, your data is most likely all over the place instead of aligned neatly in a row.

This would be kind of like parking your car a few miles from your house, than walking home. It just causing more work.

Okay, so I stopped defrag, then it started showing me 99% disk usage. I shut down and started up my laptop, and it looks ok.

So I need to finish the defrag? The laptop is new. Like for real, my parents got it a week ago.

What about my HDD health? How can I check that?

And how can I check if I need a defrag in the first place?
