r9 290x vs gtx 970

Solution
The GTX 970 is superior in virtually every way. Save for the Vram allocation of the last .5 gigs. At 1080p the GTX is the clear choice. At higher resolutions the 290x seems to do slightly better.

There is a 3rd option, the newly released r9 380. It's in the price range of the GTX 970, it performs similarly but it boats a whole 8 gigs of Vram.

Personally I'd choose the 970 still :p

R9 290X is an excellent option especially after the price drop. It was a generic option before the 300 series came, however after the 300 series came it's drop in price made is very competitive.

It has equal or better performance against the GTX 970, however it does have a higher power consumption and higher heat output, which means you will need a solid PSU with enough wattage.

However if you are getting the blower style R9 290X i wouldn't bother it will be hot + hot and noisy. Also the GTX 970 has good headroom for overclocking.

MSI Gaming is currently listed Tier 3 in my upcoming tier list.

I would recommend EVGA SSC or G1 Gaming

Hey man, I have another question for you.
I have come across a refurbished gtx 970 http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=04G-P4-2974-RX.
It comes with a 1 year warranty. I've come to realize that this is the highest I can afford to spend, so do you think it's a good deal?

That is a fantastic deal!! holy crap. I might just buy one of those too so I can sli mine.

And it has a 1 yer warranty, that's fantastic.

Remember, refurbished doesn't always mean used, it could have been used for display or was an open box at the warehouse.
