Should I Upgrade my Gaming Rig or hold out?

So my mum has asked me to build her a PC for general use, basic games and streaming videos etc to the TV. I'm wondering if I should just give her my current PC and put the money towards building myself a new gaming rig as mine has decent parts but is roughly 4 years old now.

1) Could anyone tell me how much my current PC is worth if I sold it?
My PC's current specs are:
CPU - Intel Core i7-2600K CPU @ 3.40GHz (
CPU Cooler – Noctua NH-D15
Video Card - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670
MoBo - ASUS P8Z68-V PRO
RAM - Kingston 8GB DDR3
HDD – Seagate 1tb Barracuda
Case – NZXT H440

2) If I built myself a new gaming Rig I would have a flexible budget of around $1200 (I don’t need screens or peripherals).
Would this be worth it? Are there any parts I should consider keeping for myself and buying cheaper parts for mum? Any recommendations on specific parts?

(Or should I just hold out for a while before upgrading for myself?)

Any input or advice would be appreciated, Thanks.

Mums Build.
CPU – i7 2600k
GPU – GTX 670
Motherboard – Asus P8Z68-V PRO
RAM – Kingston 8GB DDR3
CPU Cooler – CM hyper 212 evo
HDD - wd blue wd10ezex 1tb
PSU – Seasonic s12 II 520W (if she deosnt play games like BF4 and GTA V) else a 620W
Case – Its a personal preference but i would say you give over the h440 and buy a full tower one by fractal design , since your Build is screaming to embrace SLi soon.

My Build
CPU – Skylake i5 6600k
GPU – GTX 980 (EVGA i suggest since they have the best warranties and good performance / price ratio)
Motherboard - Asus Z170 AR Socket LGA1151 ATX Motherboard - DDR4
RAM – Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4 2666MHz
CPU Cooler - Noctua NH-D15
HDD – Seagate 1tb Barracuda
PSU – Thermaltake...

Your machine is more than enough for her requirements.
For your new rig , you should be aiming for this spec wise:http://pcpartpicker.com/guide/6Qyp99/enthusiast-gaming-build
Although the visual appeal of the components is kinda below average , so a little more (5%) is required if you want it a specific theme oriented.

Skylake machines will cost 10% more overall , but its a fair upgrade and the best part is the motherboard, not the CPu . You can get one right now subject to availability at your preferred retailers.
Personally i would prefer the skylake since it opens up a lot of scope for upgradability and cheaper and high performance components in the future, not because of the 10% minor CPU difference.
What do you think?

Yeah, I'd probly agree with going for a Skylake build since the 6600k is roughly the same price as the 4690K at my local store. I'm just completely unfamiliar with builds for a skylake machine. Is there specific motherboards you would recommend. I might also want to keep my old case and CPU cooler as they are fairly new would these still fit?

Yes they will all fit. There are two types of z170 motherboards . one with ddr4 and other with ddr3 . I know only ASus z170p d3 with ddr3 ram support. With that you can also utilize your older ram.
Else you can buy the rest ddr4 motherboards, , i would recommend that by the way.
They are all little costly right now. But your choice should depend on whether you need SLi or not. Then look for the design in that range. Rest is pretty much all the same.

Alright thanks for all the help so far.

Here's the builds I've put together (underlined parts i already own).

Mums Build.
CPU – i7 2600k
GPU – GTX 670
Motherboard – Asus P8Z68-V PRO
RAM – Kingston 8GB DDR3

CPU Cooler –
HDD -
PSU –
Case –

My Build
CPU – Skylake i5 6600k
GPU – GTX 980 (brand undecided)
Motherboard - Asus Z170 AR Socket LGA1151 ATX Motherboard - DDR4
RAM – Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4 2666MHz
CPU Cooler - Noctua NH-D15
HDD – Seagate 1tb Barracuda
PSU – Thermaltake Toughpower Gold 850w
Case – NZXT H440

Could anyone suggest good budget parts to complete my mum's build or give me an idea of what power supply i can get away with.

for the CPU cooler pick something else to match better with your board, creme and brown will ruin the look: http://www.amazon.com/Zalman-CNPS9900MAX-R-CPU-Cooler-Red/dp/B004CYZ7E4/ref=sr_1_11?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1440072636&sr=1-11&refinements=p_72%3A1248879011%2Cp_36%3A1253505011

The motherboard is kinda costly one here , you can switch to a red black themed one with SLi and save a few bucks. Also by buying a single 8gb ram now and buy another one (same model) later when prices drop after 6 months since currently ddr4 is a luxury.

You can also pick a 970 if you will game at fullHd only . 980 is for 4k and multi monitor setups. Add an SSD samsung 850 256gb with the money you save . The performance boost is enormous and totally recommended for general usage.

True, good idea on the RAM. I kind of like the white and black for the motherboard, since my H440 case is white and black and it's actually one of the cheaper ones at centrecom. Yea, I'll definitely keep looking and do a bit more research before i do my build. Just gonna buy mum's parts and get her up and running first (probably tomorrow) then I'll worry about mine, id love to fit in an SSD if i can.
