They are almost tied performance wise. However, since you'd like to play at 1440p at least, then it might be better to go with R9 390 as it has more VRAM (in fact, double the VRAM GTX 970 has).

Honestly they both run it fine with the 390 taking the lead by a few FPS at all resolutions. But it does use more power. (talking a few dollars a month at most) but is cheaper right off the bat. I would go 390 for extra ram and considering DX 12 games are running MUCH better on AMD hardware currently http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2015/08/directx-12-tested-an-early-win-for-amd-and-disappointment-for-nvidia/
