Hello all,

About half a year ago I lost my motherboard due to a crash while updating it, and I've been using a temporary replacement since. Since only the motherboard went to waste I've kept the processor(AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition) in a box on a shelf while I've been looking for a different motherboard. Thing is, my brother's pc has the same socket but for some reason it has this awful audio hiss and noise, so I'm trying to be a bit more careful choosing a motherboard. I know the processor may be old already but I'm currently using an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 and I believe that's way worse...

Anyways it boils down to this, I'm looking for a motherboard which supports my unused processor(AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition), a motherboard which does not suffer from awful audio hiss/noise, or low audio volume which my current motherboard(Acer FMCP7AM) does.. I have an SSD(Samsung 840 EVO 120GB) and I'm looking for a motherboard that allows me to use it optimally.

Other components in my current system;
AMD HD6950
Corsair CX600
Samsung HD103SJ

I hope someone has more knowledge and could help me out with finding something..

Thanks,

Bobbie

Actually no, the Phenom and the C2Q are going to be pretty damn close. I'd say that Phenom is more like a Q9500 than a Q9300, but otherwise they are very similar. The hitch is that you can OC the nuts of the Phenom with relative ease.

As for a mobo for your AMD, I'd probably 970 since you aren't looking for anything too special. Look at a Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P or a Asus M5A97 PLUS unless you think you may want to upgrade to an FX83XX in which case I'd probably speed more so I can get a better OC. You might be able to score a deal around Black Friday. Obviously if you have a Micro Center around, you could score a petty good deal on a mobo and CPU right now.

Your problem is, to get a decent board that won't hobble your system in some way, you need to get a 990FX board; if you're going to spend over $100 though, it might be time to consider an Intel S1150 alternative. Lesser AMD boards like the 970 will run a slower Hypertransport buss (e.g. 4800MT/s); many also have weak VRMs that aren't suitable for overclocking.

Thanks for the quick response, I'm actually not from the US so black friday won't be nearly as profitable here in The Netherlands, I'm seeing a few negative reviews about the Gigabyte so I will probably get the Asus M5A97 PLUS you suggested. As I haven't OCed my CPU before, would you say it's easy with that board?(And would I get any noticeable performance gain?)
