Windows 7 64 bit running slow.

i upgraded to windows 7 64 bit from 32 bit.it has slowed down my laptop most of my games are not working or having resolution issues.i think i have made a mistake.i have 4gb ram and a 2gb graphic card .what should i do,should i get back to 32bit or go for windows 8.1 32bit. Please suggest.

Your best bet is to just go back to the x86 win7 you were using. Skyrim and everything else you have been using is compatible with x64 and x86 and x86 programs can and do work with x64. If you don't care about wiping the drive then I just suggest doing that and starting from scratch. There could be a corruption or even a virus from a program lingering in your files and you just haven't been able to get to it. Also, there is no such thing as too much RAM. So, if you can, install more as well. Also, sometimes if a program doesn't like to open when you do it normally, you can sometime try to open it as an administrator and it works perfectly fine too. Try that before wiping or anything else. You might just have to reinstall the programs too.

The x64 version is a much larger OS and so it uses more RAM. Also, x64 bit OS's will utilize x64 bit programs when it can. These are also larger versions of programs. You just don't have the RAM to work with a x64 bit system. That's why they put x86 on there to begin with.

First thing to do is add any more RAM if you can afford to do so. If not simply revert back to 32 bit. And the resolution issues sound possibly like a driver issue? I'm sure there is a fix for that with some details.

64bit Windows is NOT "much bigger" than 32bit Windows and is necessary to even use the full 4GB he already has. 64bit Windows has run fine on systems with 4GB since XP including Vista and will easily run on less. There is no basis to say he needs more RAM at all.

The most likely scenario is he has not installed any of the laptop drivers. It has NOTHING to do with Windows be 64 bit.

@unksol: Your right, that's why it requires more RAM and hard disk space to utilize x64 over x86.

@OP: Do make sure you have all drivers from Microsoft, Intel/AMD, and you pc manufacturer installed first. If it is still slow then make sure you don't have a crap antivirus like Norton or McAfee on there, then disable windows defender if you use another antivirus program, then clean up or disk files with "Disk Clean Up", then if you have a mechanice HDD you should defragment it with "Disk Defragment". Then if it is miraculously still running slow, kill off your start up applications and everything you keep running in the background. If that doesn't work then expand your RAM to a larger amount. Or you could just expand your RAM and see if that just fixes the problem.

What? 4GB is not enough your Win7 x64? This is an utter bullshit! You need 64 bit Windows even to be able to use all of the the 4GB RAM.
You will have problems with Win7 x64, if you have only 2GB RAM.
I ran my old Q6600 with 4GB RAM for years and it was not in any mean slow for Windows.
I upgraded to E3-1231V3 rig since the Q6600 can not follow the new AA games anymore.
There should be something else in your system, drivers perhaps? or did you try to install Win7 x64 simply over your previous Win7 x86? Do a clean install!

i did do a clean install.i downloaded all the proper drivers.but still my windows have got slow first it used to take 14 to 15 sec to reboot now its taking 28 to 32 seconds.i formatted my whole system nd then put the new windows.
