When I connect my laptop and my TV via HDMI, my TV shows 'no signal' and my laptop does not recognize another display device. I have tried connecting my laptop to a different TV, and my TV to a different laptop, both of which worked fine. But this TV with this particular laptop will not detect each other.

As far as computer literacy goes I just about know how to switch the thing on, so besides restarting everything and checking my laptop's drivers I have very little idea how to troubleshoot this. Any help is appreciated.

Laptop: Toshiba Satellite L50-B-1P1, Windows 8.1
TV Model no: BLED24FDHL8DVD

Solution
Try pressing the windows key and p at the same time, then selecting "extend". After that, right click on the desktop and go to "Screen Resolution".
If you see two screen images, then you know that your laptop is indeed sending out a signal. Some TVs don't support certain desktop resolutions but are "accidentally" shown as monitors rather than TVs. Simply pick an HD resolution (1920x1080p or 1280x720p) for the TV (you can press "Identify" to see which monitor is what number) and it may work.

There is only one screen image in this menu. When I press 'detect' the laptop can't find another monitor.
