My power supply only has one 4-pin connector and my motherboard had a 8-pin socket.

Will I be ok if I only connect the 4-pin connector to the motherboard?

My CPU is the Intel Pentium G3258 @ 3.2, but might overclock of possible.

My power supply is the antec smart power 450w

Solution
No, you can't just plug in a 4 pin connector to the motherboard. That power supply does have a standard motherboard power plug, you are either not seeing it or it's one that can be broken apart into 2 pieces and you need to click them together again.

well if you actually look up his PSU it only has a 4 pin for the cpu, there is no 4+4 or 8 pin for the cpu. Read you manual for the motherboard, some of them will allow you to only plug a 4 pin and will tell you which side to use of the 8 pin. If it doesnt say anything in the manual you should really look at buying a new PSU, I would not trust a 4 to 8 pin adapter. Im a firm believer in if the PSU does not have the plugs that you need it time for a new PSU.

Back when 8 pin plugs were just coming out i had a gigabyte board that came with a 4 pin dust cover in half the plug, the manual said you could use a 4 pin if that all you had or remove the cover and use a 8 pin. I havent seen that on new board because is almost standard that a PSU comes with a 4 + 4 or 8 pin cpu plug now. Most of the higher end PSU come with dual 8 pin cables. Im not sure if newer board still allow you to use a single 4 pin for the cpu anymore, hence why i said to refer to the manual to find out.

You will be fine. 450w is plenty for your system. 4pin CPU connector will only plug in one way into the 8pin motherboard connector, so you don't have to worry about getting it wrong.

8pin CPU connector is made for power hungry/ overclocking of CPUs. They deliver stronger more stable current to your CPU. Your particular CPU is very light weight so don't worry about it at all.

I'm using 4pin in 8pin CPU connector for my old Intel e8400 dual core CPU. That one had 65tdp and yours has 53watt tdp. I had 0 problems overclocking it.

Like I've said 8pin CPU connector is there for higher wattages. Think AMD.

Some mixed thoughts here, because my CPU only has a tdp of 53w I think it might be alright.
I have heard from some people that a 4-pin supplies 75w, and if your CPU requires less than that (which mine does) then it will be ok to use it as long as no overclocking.
Also does the rest of my build effect whether or not this would be fine to do?
