Hi everyone,

I built two PCs 2 years ago as a beginner but never really delved into studying upgrades. (Same specs, was promo bundle at the time)
I use it mainly for work and gaming with my son as form of our bonding since I am always at work.

We currently have (according to userbenchmark.com my friend recommended):

Processor: Intel Core i7-3770k
Graphics Card: AMD R9 280X
Drives:
PNY 120GB SSD (Son),
Samsung 840 120GB(Mine),
WD Blue 750GB (Both)
Memory: 8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3
Motherboard: AsRock Z77 Extreme 4
Cooler: Hyper 212 EVO
PSU: TX Series Corsair TX650M
Case: Corsair 600T

My budget cap for upgrading is $1000 - $1200 (for both) and willing to put in more if needed (Thanksgiving + Christmas) and I want to prepare for MGS V and play Witcher 3 at least High Quality.

Thank you in advance!

The point in waiting (and trying to be patient :) ) ...

for your $1,000 - $1,200 investment over the next few months you may see a 50% gain in performance. Waiting until next Spring for the new Radeon/GeForce cards (likely with 'HBM' memory) you will likely quadruple your performance over the R9 280X.

That's a 'SWAG' guess but not a real exaggeration.
Your builds are fine -- don't worry about it.

For the Witcher3 you may consider upgrading to the GTX 970 or the Radeon R9 390 for a nice bump in performance, but in other titles you simply will not see that big of a gain.

You would be better served to save that cash and put it toward the new video cards arriving in 2016.

Admirable
The only thing you need to touch is the graphics card. Get anything from a 970/390X to a 980/980Ti and both of you should be set for a while. Then again, you could always wait for nVidia's new cards coming out next year. Worst case, you get a 900-series card for cheaper.
