My motherboard HDMI and VGA ports don't seem to work

I built my first PC last night and when I had finally finished it, I plugged it in to a TV with the HDMI port and it didn't show anything on screen. The PC light turned on, the fans were spinning and everything was working but the HDMI port wouldn't work. I then plugged a VGA cable into the motherboard port and once again nothing showed up on the screen. So then I plugged the VGA adapter into the graphics card and it finally showed up on the TV. I don't have an OS yet so it was just searching for a boot drive. The funny thing though is that the usb ports on the motherboard worked. I don't know what the problem is! Please help. Thank you.

Having a graphics card installed basically turns off the on-board graphics of your motherboard. This prevents the motherboards' HDMI slot from working.

You need to either use an HDMI slot on your graphics card (if it has one) or un-install the graphics card and use the HDMI slot on your motherboard - providing all the software is up to date...
