About a week ago I began putting together what was suppose to be a simple upgrade from a measly AMD FX4100 and AM3+ motherboard to a top end intel i7 6700k. I know how little difference in performance there is to the 4790k, but I decided to go with it anyway. My issue is with the 2 ram slots furthest from the CPU, wont work. No ram is recognised and the computer wont boot.
So far this has been an absolute nightmare. To start off with I bought a Asus z170-p d3 because I saw it was compatible with DDR3. The issue I had was that when I put all my sticks of ram in the system, the computer wouldn't boot, no bios, no beeps from the beeper. After about 30 seconds of waiting it would restart over and over. So I took a step back and removed everything from the motherboard except the boot drive and 1 stick of RAM. The computer then posted and was able to get into bios. After finding that the computer was now working, I put a second stick of ram in the computer in the correct configuration and found that, like before would not boot and the computer would continue to restart. The next thought was to try the ram in the slot next to the other stick of ram closest to the CPU, and found that it would boot with ram in that configuration. After about 5 different sticks of ram one of which was mentioned on the Asus compatibility list for the z170-p d3 me and my uncle concluded maybe the motherboard was just bad and decided to put an RMA on it and purchase another one.
in the end I ended up buying 2 more motherboards. one more Asus z170-p d3 and one slightly more expensive Asus z170-k DDR4 board and 16GB DDR4. Neither of which solved the problem. So after all this I thought, maybe it's the CPU that is just bad... All the sticks of ram are not faulty, they were all taken out of fully functioning PC's that my uncle has running as well as my own. The DDR4 sticks were both being recognised in Bios if placed in the two slots closest to the motherboard. So what else could it be besides a bad CPU. I purchased another one and....... same issue...
The last thing we tried was a different powersupply in case the one I have was in some way faulty... which also did nothing to help the issue.
So after spending up to £1000 in just 3 motherboards, 2 different sets of memory (DDR3 and DDR4) and 2 i7 6700k, i'm a bit stuck for what to do now... all the stuff will be taken back to the store on Monday, so I will at least get my money back, but what could the issue possibly be? Can I have really gotten 2 CPU with bad memory controllers? were all three motherboard bad? Does Asus just have bad boards for under £100? What could it be?
the exact specs for the last config were:
Core i7 6700k
Asus Z170-k
16GB Corsair Vengance LPX DDR4 2133
Corsair CX 750 power supply
Crucial m500 SSD
Hitachi Deskstar 500gb HDD
Didn't bother putting the GPU in but (Radeon R9 280)
Any help or suggestions would be great! Let me know if you've heard of, or had a similar problem yourself!
