About a week ago I began putting together what was suppose to be a simple upgrade from a measly AMD FX4100 and AM3+ motherboard to a top end intel i7 6700k. I know how little difference in performance there is to the 4790k, but I decided to go with it anyway. My issue is with the 2 ram slots furthest from the CPU, wont work. No ram is recognised and the computer wont boot.

So far this has been an absolute nightmare. To start off with I bought a Asus z170-p d3 because I saw it was compatible with DDR3. The issue I had was that when I put all my sticks of ram in the system, the computer wouldn't boot, no bios, no beeps from the beeper. After about 30 seconds of waiting it would restart over and over. So I took a step back and removed everything from the motherboard except the boot drive and 1 stick of RAM. The computer then posted and was able to get into bios. After finding that the computer was now working, I put a second stick of ram in the computer in the correct configuration and found that, like before would not boot and the computer would continue to restart. The next thought was to try the ram in the slot next to the other stick of ram closest to the CPU, and found that it would boot with ram in that configuration. After about 5 different sticks of ram one of which was mentioned on the Asus compatibility list for the z170-p d3 me and my uncle concluded maybe the motherboard was just bad and decided to put an RMA on it and purchase another one.

in the end I ended up buying 2 more motherboards. one more Asus z170-p d3 and one slightly more expensive Asus z170-k DDR4 board and 16GB DDR4. Neither of which solved the problem. So after all this I thought, maybe it's the CPU that is just bad... All the sticks of ram are not faulty, they were all taken out of fully functioning PC's that my uncle has running as well as my own. The DDR4 sticks were both being recognised in Bios if placed in the two slots closest to the motherboard. So what else could it be besides a bad CPU. I purchased another one and....... same issue...

The last thing we tried was a different powersupply in case the one I have was in some way faulty... which also did nothing to help the issue.

So after spending up to £1000 in just 3 motherboards, 2 different sets of memory (DDR3 and DDR4) and 2 i7 6700k, i'm a bit stuck for what to do now... all the stuff will be taken back to the store on Monday, so I will at least get my money back, but what could the issue possibly be? Can I have really gotten 2 CPU with bad memory controllers? were all three motherboard bad? Does Asus just have bad boards for under £100? What could it be?

the exact specs for the last config were:

Core i7 6700k
Asus Z170-k
16GB Corsair Vengance LPX DDR4 2133
Corsair CX 750 power supply
Crucial m500 SSD
Hitachi Deskstar 500gb HDD

Didn't bother putting the GPU in but (Radeon R9 280)

Any help or suggestions would be great! Let me know if you've heard of, or had a similar problem yourself!

have you seen the max amount of memory your board can support? seriously I think its the only issue in my opinion and anyway I wouldn't recommend the z170 configuration as its not mature enough. a x99 or z97 are mature enough and have a lot of known issues/solution so if I was in your case I would not buy a very new platform right out the way... its my opinion though. also I think maybe you've added ddr3 and ddr4 at the same time and it may be causing the issue...

No I think you've misunderstood what I said.

The z170-p d3 is a DDR3 motherboard.
The z170-k is a DDR4 motherboard.

I understand that it maybe the fact that it's a new platform and potentially has some problems because of how new it is. but there are only 2 processors available so it should at least work, as there aren't exactly many combinations. so if it doesn't work with this, what is it suppose to work with?

While having just the one stick of DDR4 installed, are there any options in the BIOS to configure the Ram ? Perhaps set a less aggressive profile and then try adding the other module/s.

I've had instances of boards not supporting stock frequencies for the Ram, although it was rated to do so, but that was on older platforms.

tried it.

Sorry, i'd forgotten the issue is fixed now. It turned out, for whatever reason the CPU cooler was causing the problem. No idea how that works, but i'm not going to question...

If the cooler is attached too tight in a corner or saide it can throw the CPU out of level, so it doesn't get full contact with all the pins - this often reults in the MC (memory controller) seeing the DRAM but unable to use it, or not even 'seeing' it (often in but a single channel of the two channels

My CPU cooler is not attached to tight :/ I did untight but it didin't helped :/
RAM only works in first two slots that are closest to CPU and they are both running as channel timing sub A in Bios and that is strange beacuse I think that one of thesse slots is channel B.I have RAM in 1 black slot and 1 red slot,

Litetally almost the exact situation with me. 6700k asus hero viii 8gb x 4 gskill 3200mhz. First time error 55 and 41 all the time. Finally got a single stick to boot into bios, lowered freq and raised voltage. Nothing. The two ram slots next to the cpu (a1 and a2) were working only. B 1 amd b 2 wouldnt work with a single stick in either. I tried loosening the pump, remounting, checked for bent pins, couldn't find anything. I rmaed the board. Second hero 55 error right at the start. And 41. Tried all configurations. After remounting the pump 10x I magically got it to boot with 4 sticks in xmp and it worked great. New pump came in. Installed New pump and error 55 and 41 again. All configurations this time ONLY b1 and b2 would work with a single stick. The opposite on the last motherboard. So werid. I figure the ram is good. I had quad channel running and benched it amd was very stable. So now im thinking imc. Rma coming on 6700k. This is ridiculous. These error 55 and 41 are all over google
