Hello,

Yeah, so I just picked up a late 2014 Mac Mini - i5 2.8/8GB/1TB Fusion Drive for $560. The guy told me he bought it in November, so I still had some time on the warranty and could also get AppleCare if I wanted to. I checked the serial number and everything came up fine and I found out that is has AppleCare unit October 2017. I thought I got a pretty good deal.

Now, I bought it to replace a Windows laptop that we were using just for web browsing, really. Then I started thinking...can I use this for school purposes? I have a PC that I use, but I have to worry about file compatibility going from Mac (at school) to my PC. If I don't have to do that, it would be great.

I am in a Video Motion Graphics program. We use Adobe Creative Cloud, Final Cut Pro and I am pretty sure it is going to need me to use Logic Pro, as well. I know that the later two I have to use Mac for, but I would have to go to campus to use one. If I don't have to and I can use the "new" Mini that I got, it would be amazing. I will also be using it for personal light Garageband projects.

So, my question is how do you all think that this model Mac Mini will do?

Thank you in advance for all responses!

I believe Apple Final Cut Pro can make use of GPGPU (thanks, in part, to OpenCL in this specific case). You got a pretty fair deal for the Mac Mini, especially considering it has AppleCare. Unfortunately, however, (a) the CPU is a dual-core processor, and (b) it has integrated graphics (Intel Iris, I believe); thus, it's not the kind of machine that can realistically be used for intense video production. On the bright side, you have a fairly portable computer for web browsing and other light tasks -- all you need is a monitor, keyboard, mouse (unless you know all or most of the shortcuts like me, in which case you don't really need the mouse), and appropriate connecting wires. At school, I'm more than sure you'll be able to make use of their monitors and other peripherals to make your computer "complete." (No, I'm not being sarcastic. I'm being serious, and I'm not trying to be funny. I've done this before, and I've seen others do it too.)
