I built my PC about this time 4 years ago (aagh time flies!). Hardware is:
ASUS P8P67 mobo (rev 1.xx)
EVGA GTX 560 TI
2 x 2GB G.SKILL Ripjaws RAM (DDR3 1600)
i5-2500K
Some Antec power supply, around 500 watts (didn't see any identifier on it and I've forgotten)
Case - HAF Cooler Master 912
I'm looking to upgrade my video card and PSU. The goal's to play the Witcher 3 at 1920x1080p at great settings (coincidentally, my initial build 4 years ago was for The Witcher 2). I know "maxed out" might be a bit much for the Witcher 3, but high on just about everything would be great.
I'm looking at this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487088&cm_re=evga_gtx_970-_-14-487-088-_-Product
I think a GTX 970 is what I'd go with, and I had good results with their 560 Ti and setting custom fan profiles with their EVGA Precision software. I'm, well, about 4 years out of date with my knowledge of technology, so I'm not quite sure what the differences are between that particular 970, and the various other offerings. I see things like G-Synch and ACX, but on research they don't seem too important. I'm assuming if it's not offered with the ACX cooler then it's assumed that it isn't critical to function. I'm not going to overclock anything any more than it comes. 350$ is pretty much how much I'm willing to spend on a video card.
My PSU still works fine, but is getting quite old (maybe 6 years now, don't even remember). I figured I might as well. I was thinking something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371031&cm_re=antec_psu-_-17-371-031-_-Product
I'd be willing to spend a little more but I'm not sure what's worth spending on with PSUs. Modular cables would be nice, but aren't necessary.
Any parts suggestions and feedback you have would be appreciated. My biggest question here is actually the older parts. I'm hoping to get another couple of years out of the motherboard and CPU, and then upgrade those. I think I've got the correct motherboard connectors for a GTX 970, though the motherboard is PCI-e 2.0 instead of 3.0, though I believe that it'll still work and isn't a big deal for a single GPU. Am I missing anything as far as comptability and performance?
Oh, one more question: RAM. I was thinking of grabbing another 4 gigs, 2x2 gigs. It doesn't look like anything has changed there so I would just get something similar to my existing RAM. I vaguely remember when I installed the current RAM that I had issues getting them to fit in slots side by side (they were too wide) so they're installed in slots 2 and 4 instead of 1 and 2 (or 2 and 3, or 3 and 4). Is that an issue with RAM or was I just being too cautious back then?
Thanks!
