If I UPGRADE ATI cards, do I need to reinstall the drivers?

Greetings!

I just changed from a ATI 280 sapphire to a 390 sapphire.

When I turned it on, it seemed to be looking for drivers, but after rebooting it, it seems they adapted on their own.
When I went to the site to look for the drivers, it seems the main download now is the CATALYST program. Not a specific driver per vcard.

Should I erase everything and reinstall anyway?

Thanks!

They are 2 different chips in the GPU so It should recognize the difference.

Like Jack said Remove all GPU drivers and software and reinstall. The only time this is no necessary is if you are changing to the same exact type of card, like swapping out a 280 for a 280, or adding a card for crossfire.
A 390 is basically a tweaked 290 (Edit - dunno why I originally thought you went 290 => 390) so you wouldn't think so.... however bveing so cose could be what's causing it not tpo recognize that you swapped cards. Always best to follow SOP

1. Remove all drivers.
2. Shut down PC
3. Take out card / install new card
4. Boot and install drivers.

Thank you both for your answers! they've been very helpful!

Nevermind about the driver.
For some reason it installs the "GAMING EVOLVED" thing and then it stops installing the rest.
So you gotta tell it to install the drivers.

Stupid ATI stuff.

Thanks for your help! It's all good now!

I don't recommend 3rd part uninstall utilities. Just use windows control panel uninstall.

When needed, maybe 1 in 100 instances, I will use Ccleaner to identify any leftover driver registry entries related to the AMD / nVidia drivers and then remove them ***and nothing else***. letting any utility make wholesale chnages your system is generally a bad idea,
