You should be happy with the Rock, while yes I lean towards Asus, it and the Rock are my first choices for 1150/1151 then GB mobos, for AMD rigs I look primarily to Asus and GB with the Rock third. Those are the only three brands I'll use or recommend ;)

All motherboards are fairly similar some come with different variations in RAM speed eg. 2133mhz 1666mgz. They also have more or less slots, some motherboards come with 1 PCIe slot whereas most gaming ones come with 2.
I've used ASRock previously and it worker okay but one of the PCIe slots got a small crack in it and forced me to change to a Gigabyte mobo. So ASRock is decent but many people complain about their mobos DOA (Dead on Arrival) so I would go for the Gigabyte or Asus simply because they're a better product. Overall no real differences just some Motherboards claim to use better USB Slots and some might have built in wifi and bluetooth. So overall it's kind of a pissing contest to see who can make up the most stuff about their mobo.

What would make the asus better than the rock? If the rock went up to a extreme6, would it be better?

Ah, like a game of chess, you throw up the Rock's Extreme 6, so I'll counter with the Asus Z170
Pro Gamer (same price as the EX6) - I look to Asus first especially after the 1150 mobos, where they were the class of the mobos, from what I've seen so far, think the same is true with 1151, I've got a Z170 Hero due for delivery Monday

Ah gotcha. So you favor Asus, I honestly don't know what to get. I have a r9 290 vapor-x(blue/black) and blue ddr4 ram, I kinda wanna match the colors SOMEWHAT if possible... Thats why I figured the asus z170-a or the gigabyte, but i do like the rock's cosmetic looks.

I don't wanna sacrifice performance for looks...
