Should I upgrade to:GTX 970 vs R9 290x vs R9 390?(Cost,noise,heat aren't great concerns)

Hello,

First I'd like to say that I have read about a dozen threads here regarding the same subject,as well as read reviews of the aforementioned cards without managing to come to a decision.
As mentioned in the title noise and cost aren't such a great concern, and neither is heat unless it is too much for my fans to handle.

Specs: Intel i7 4790,16GB RAM,Fazn Case Fazn Hephaestus II Black Midi Tower,Gigabyte Z97X Gaming GT (1150/Z97X/DD),Corsair Builder Series CX750 750W PSU 80+ Bronze.I use a 22' Full HD Samsung TV as a monitor.I have 2 120mm fans installed in my case, and so far I had been happy with the performance of my Sapphire VGA PCI X VAPOR-X R9 280X 3GD5.
However, even though I barely did anything GPU intensive during the summer(and generally didn't use my PC much)my GPU started having overheating problems, and since its within warranty I will be upgrading.

From my understanding, the R9 390 is intended for 4K gaming, which I am not interested in and won't be needing it for it,however the 8GB VRAM is what makes me consider it.I want to be able to play most of the AAA games that will be coming out this year(like Fallout 4,AC:Syndicate etc) with almost maxed settings at a decent FPS,like I was able to do with these year's games on my previous GPU(like Shadows of Mordor,AC:Unity,AC:Rogue,GTAV,Witcher 3 etc.GTAV was the only one I couldn't run with everything maxed completely,I didn't have enough VRAM apparently).

So,to get to the point,is the GTX 970,with its 256bit memory interface and 4GB VRAM outperforming the R9 390,with its 512bit memory interface and 8GB VRAM ? The difference in memory speed and engine clock is about 200 Mhz in favor of the 970.While I am not interested in 4K gaming, the R9 390 seems the better choice, even though I have limited knowledge in the matter, and since games seem to require more and more VRAM,its 8GB seem to be the best future proof choice.Thoughts?
Is the R9 290x worth considering and if yes why?

I couldn't really get a satisfying answer from various GPU benchmarks and reviews all over the Internet.

Thank you for your time.

TL;DR : GTX 970 vs R9 290x vs R9 390?Cost and noice are irrelevant. What is the better GPU performance wise and also future proof?

Edit:I won't be doing any overclocking, and I'm willing to upgrade some other part if it results in being able to use the better GPU.

Solution
The only thing I would say is that while the R9 390x has 8GB of memory benchmarks have shown that by the time you actually increase the graphics detail to utilize the memory your frame rates would have dropped to the point you'd have to consider lowering something to bring the frames back up. On the other hand the GTX 970 has segmented memory and it's been hit and miss which games are actually negatively impacted by this. If you're playing at 1080p then for the majority of games you'd be fine since they normally use about 3-4GB anyway and you're fine if the GPU driver or the game knows how to handle the memory once you reach the 3.5GB limit however there have been a few reports that performance can be impeded when the additional .5GB...

your power supply has made the choice for you: the gtx 970.

cx corsairs have poor capacitors, and the amd choices have pretty high power spikes...

Thanks for the answer.Have you got anything to add regarding the performance of the 970 vs the 390 though? I would be willing to upgrade my power supply as well if it meant getting a better GPU,performance and future-proof wise.

I personally would say that the R9 390x with it's 8GB of memory is the better of the two if you're planning to play at 2k and above but if 1080p is where you'll be either card would do fine but the GTX 970 would edge out due to power requirements.

Apologies @sizzing, was just reading and accidentally downvoted on the touchscreen.

If someone knows how I can "un"downvote this I'd appreciate the direction!

I have read about this issue of the GTX 970 quite a few times, would you mind telling me what game it was and what settings did you use(if you remember) just for curiosity's sake?

I'm leaning on the GTX 970,since it seems to be the safest option regarding my power supply, and since no one makes a counter-argument about the 390 having greater performance to convince me to upgrade my power supply as well.I'll be checking prices on some power supplies and I give an update later.

Hmm I was able to SoM with maxed settings using my previous GPU ,I don't know what FPS I had on average but never noticed any lag/stuttering/issues.The GTX 970 is better than the R9 280x right?

From everything I've read the 970 is better than the 280x and as for the Shadow of Mordor.... I don't know maybe it was just me but I've seen reports of this issue with various games but then some say they don't experience any issues. For the most part though i'll see the ram cap near the 3.5GB limit and just stop never carrying over.

I have decided to go with GTX 970.Hopefully I don't regret my choice.I have heard Nvidia also has better driver support although I never had any problem with AMD(when Dying Light came out for example, many people with AMD cards had problems, same I think with AC:Unity). Thanks for the answers.
