Computer shuts down after 1,5 seconds with new PSU

I' having a bit of a weird problem, I just bought a new PSU, but after installing it my computer shuts down after about 1,5 seconds, the fans barely have time to spin up. I tried removing all the cables from the motherboard and PSU, so that I'm left with only the MB, CPU and GPU power connected. Still no luck.

Thinking I might have screwed something up in the installation process I reinstalled my old PSU. With the old PSU back in play the computer started up with no problems.

At this point I'm thinking that the new PSU might be DOA, but before sending it in I try the new PSU in a different computer, but now, suddenly the new PSU works and the old computer boots up normally.

I've tried switching out the RAM as well, and I've tried using the MB's onboard power button.

(The two computers have very different components, but the biggest difference I can see, in regards to the power connections, is that the old computer has a 4-pin CPU connector and my main computer has an 8-pin connector.)

What could be the cause? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

tl;dr:
Old PSU works in both computer A and B, new PSU only works in computer B.

Yeah, I've tried it a few times now, changing which of the modular cables I use and which connectors on the PSU I use (since the PSU have multiple connections for the modular cables, CPU1, CPU2, CPU3, VGA1, VGA2 etc.)

In my last attempt I disconnected the old PSU from my main computer (working combo) and connected the new PSU in exactly the same manner as it was connected to the old computer(working combo) to the new computer and still no luck.

Edit:
I should mention though that the reason I bought a new PSU was because the old PSU had had a few boot-up issues when all periferals were connected (6 HDDs, 1 cdrom and 6 fans), I thought this was due to a loss of efficiency on the old PSU (it's from around 2009). But now I'm thinking the MB might not be in the best condition and that's what's causing the problem.
