1440p or 4k?

Hi all!

I know this topic has been touched on in the past, but I'd like opinions for my specific situation. I have a Gigabyte GTX 980ti and have been looking into new monitors. My dilemma is thus: should I go for a 1440p, IPS, high refresh rate, G-Sync monitor or wait for the new 4k, IPS, 60hz, G-Sync monitor(s) coming out later this year from ASUS? I know my card can run 4k at okay frame rates, but I've never used a 144hz monitor before and I know I like high-texture gaming. Opinions?

Note: I currently play BF4, LoL, Crysis (trilogy), TitanFall, DragonAge...

in my opinion graphics cards just aren't quite there yet when it comes to 4k. 1440p 144hz is perfect for a single 980ti. the big benefit of 144hz is no stuttering, no tearing, and no need to mess with vsync. this would be a good consideration since 1440p 980 ti sits around 60-70 fps and would be much more of a smooth gaming experience. on 4k you will have much lower frame rates around 40 fps, but no need for vsync since you wont be hovering over and under that 60 fps spot. you can see vsync explained in the link i pasted below. with 4k, during minimum fps dips, you may see slowness or stuttering since it is possible you will go below the 30fps sweet spot on occasion.

a stellar 1440p 144hz experience would be best with 980 ti in...

a stellar 1440p 144hz experience would be best with 980 ti in 2-way sli.
a good 4k 60hz experience would be best with the same setup and vsync. possibly not great with a single card.

I tend to agree with the previous poster. Although I don't think you 2 980tis to do it, although a pair would be nice. I have a pair of 780tis with an overlord tempest, never had a lick of trouble. I think we're one generation away from really great 4k products. At this time, I'd stick 1440. Here's your monitor(for gaming): https://pcpartpicker.com/part/acer-monitor-xb270hubprz. If you're after an ultra-wide, then this is your monitor: https://pcpartpicker.com/part/dell-monitor-u3415w.

If it were me, this would be decided by the size of the screen and pixel density.

I briefly had a 1440p 27" screen, which I found "too large" (mentally, I got lost looking around it as if filled most of my field of vision). I currently have a 25" 1440p screen (U2515), which is excellent, but I wouldn't be wanting a higher resolution at that size, or to go below 24" at 1440p - things would be getting a little too small for me (I know I can use font scaling, but then other details start becoming small, e.g. details in images). For 4K, I wouldn't really be wanting one below 27", but preferably 29". Of course, this is just my personal preference ...

that is strange. vsync is only necessary when your fps is passing above and below 60 fps on a 60hz monitor. perhaps this is happening and you don't know about it. something to consider would be the program you are monitoring frame rates with has too slow of a scanning interval in ms to catch the fps spikes.

I am using msi afterburner to monitor the fps while gaming

yea, but you can change the rate at which it pulls the information for the graph in milliseconds in settings. It is probably defaulted at 2000. set it to 500. that means you will see 4x more information about your frame rates.

i fixed the problem, i had to change the settings in the osd. it was set to dp 1.1 as default and that only supports 30hz
