I recently got a Asus M5a78l-M/USB 3 Motherboard and I had a Seagate 2 TB HDD I was gonna use with it but it wont boot up to windows. A black screen shows up and a white underscore sits there blinking. The hard drive shows up in the boot device and boot menu but not in the Asus EZ Flash 2 tool in bios. The HDD came from an HP Pavilion 500-314. I already know it isn't corrupted as I have already ran memory tests and you can access the files when using it as a second drive.

Hi

It seems you are trying to boot up a asus motherboard with a hdd with HP windows on it
Assuming this was hp oem windows you would have run into problems as windows would detect it is no longer on a Hp motherboard.

It could be a bios setting such as requiring a windows 8 or 10 and 64 bit windows when old hdd has win 7 and or 32 bit windows

What version of windows on this 2gb hdd from HP PC ?
Did it have mbr or gpt partitioning ?

A clean install of windows may be required
Booting up from a windows DVD or USB and formatting the existing c: drive before re installing windows

Thank you for the reply! I was actually just in the proccess of doing so because I had figured it might have had to do something with it being OEM and coming from an HP Desktop. I just wasn't too sure about it and wanted to be re-assured.

Update: Backed up my data and formatted my hard drive but when I went to install new version of windows I got a partition error saying "The selected disk is of the gpt partition style" So for anyone reading this in the future and his this issue when trying to install windows simply go back into the menu on windows where it says "Install Now" and press shift+f10 (fn+shift+f10 on laptop) and the CMD will come up. Type in diskpart, then select disk 0 and finally type in clean and once it says successfully cleaned disk you can head back to the installation menu and install windows with no issues!
