My current setup runs 3 internal hard drives, a 150gb, a 500gb, and a 1Tb drive. the 2 smaller are seagate and the big one is a western digital. I recently got the free upgrade to windows 10 and did the update. Ran fine for a few days then threw up a unable to find winload.exe. I ran a chkdsk and got it running for a day, but the next restart gave me the same error, and chkdsk claimed it was now a RAW drive. This is all on the 500Gb drive. After some failed attempts at booting i decided to install windows on the 150gb drive and now have a running computer.

Here's the problem, the 500gb drive is there but is also not there. On some bootups I can see it in disk management and in file explorer but disk management says all the space is unallocated. on other bootups its available in file explorer, and i can see the root folders, however when i try to access one explorer.exe either freezes or I get an I/O error. Those time disk management says it has a healthy partition.

I've run different partition recovery programs like testdisk and Easeus's partiton recovery along with some others. All of them show read errors or find no lost partitions. The Photorec program that came with testdisk cant seem to read anything either

My question is this; Is there any way to recover whats on there? Its mostly pictures I'd like to find.

Welcome to the TH community, Machanation!

Unfortunately, it seems like your 500 GB HDD seems to have a corrupted file system, or at least that's what the RAW format indicates. The freezes and the I/O error might be indicating failure of the drive altogether, that's why it's best to run the manufacturer's diagnostic tool and determine the health and SMART data status of the HDD.
Since none of the third-party recovery tools helped, you might be dealing with physical damage. So it's probably best to turn to a professional data recovery company as they are your best chance at retrieving your pictures successfully. Better yet, contact the HDD manufacturer's support for any referrals on the companies that could help you.

In the future, I strongly recommend keep your data on more than one location as a backup. This is the best way to avoid such data loss headaches.

Good luck! Hope this was helpful.
