Printer problem: Epson Stylus Photo R220

I have new non-OEM ink cartridges in my Epson Stylus Photo R220 printer but it just sends out blank sheets when I print. What can I do to get it to print?

Thanks, Mark

It's most likely that the printhead is blocked with old, waste ink. The printhead is the cradle which holds the cartridges and moved across the printer when printing. Epson are particularly prone to printhead blockages.

You can try running the nozzle-cleaning utility in the printer preferences but I fear the blockage is too severe for that.
Time to remove the printhead and leave it to soak overnight in a bowl of warm soapy water.

Next day, rinse well in cold water and leave to dry before reassembly.

To avoid reoccurence of problem, use your printer at least every other day using all colours. This will keep the printhead loaded with fresh ink.

If you only need a printer a couple of times a month then an inkjet one is not...

If you only need a printer a couple of times a month then an inkjet one is not the best choice. Consider getting a laser or dye-sublimation printer as they don't use liquid ink which dries out and causing the blockage.

Hi Mark
Yes I have been in this industry for 10 years now and Epson are renowned for printhead clogging. Get yourself some good print head cleaning fluid and pump it into each nozzle. You may have to leave it overnight so it has time to dissolve the ink which has solidified inside of the printhead. You can even put a small amount of cleaning fluid into empty cartridges and then print with it until the dried ink gets forced out of the print head.
