Trying to set up dual monitor.. help?

I have a Sapphire Radeon R9 270X 2GB GDDR5 graphics card and a Asus VE228H monitor. I recently bought a Dell E1914H (which is a VGA only monitor) along with a VGA to HDMI converter (and a HDMI cord). I set it all up (HDMI in the graphics card, hooks up to converter box w/ the VGA which goes into the monitor) but it isn't being recognized... help?

the Asus should have come with an HDMI cable which you could use to connect it to the graphics card.

the use a DVI-I to VGA converter with the white DVI connector on the graphics card and connect the Dell via VGA.
