Laptop won't start without battery while plugged and does not charge while on

Hello,

My eMachines E442 (almost 4yrs old I think) is in a bit of a pickle at the moment. It worked fine until this afternoon, when it told me that the battery was getting low. I checked if it was plugged in, and it was!

I never use the battery as it does not hold charge (dies in about 30 mins).
But now it won't work without the battery. I tried it without and it turns on, but won't get past the red windows 10 loading screen (switched a couples back, that shouldn't be the issue, right?)
If I wait a bit while it's off, the battery will have loaded a bit and it will turn on and start, to the point where it's actually working normally, but with a (very) limited time window. The battery doesn't charge while it's on.

Do you have any idea as to what to do? I've already done a CMOS clear and it didn't work.
I've posted this in the motherboard section as I've read that it could be the power supply/motherboard that's faulty. However, that does sound a bit funny considering that it will turn on and work while on battery.

Thanks in advance for your help
Cheers

It could be that the power supply is overcharging the laptop causing it to short circuit and turn off. I would get a new power supply to make sure that is not the problem.

If the problem still occurs then return the laptop if you can as the power jack maybe damaged somehow.
