Do I need a Self-Encrypting Drive (SED)?

Bitlocker is only available on Professional and Enterprise Windows versions.
Besides, if you don't have hardware encryption (as in SED), Bitlocker is just software encryption.
I'd rather have hardware encryption.

Having said that, I am still trying to understand how I set the hardware encryption password on my Samsung 840EVO SED SSD :)
I've recently posted a question about that.
