Hi,

I am looking to upgrade my graphics card to play some modern games. I have made a couple of simple upgrades to this PC over the years. Here are the specs of the machine.

Mother Board: Dell 0R849J A03
Chipset: x58
Port: PCIe 2.0
Processor: Intel Core i7 920 Bloomfield @ 2.67GHz
Ram: 12gb G.Skill DDR3 http://tinyurl.com/pd54zgw (newegg link)
PSU: Corsair CX 430 with 6-8 pin power connector http://tinyurl.com/nczut8p (newegg link)
Boot Drive: 500gb Samsung Evo SSD
Display Preference: 1080p at 60fps

I am looking at GeForce GTX 750 series or the newer GeForce GTX 950. I should be able to run most of these with my current power supply. Also, these seems to be reasonable price (around $150).

My plan is to eventually take the newer components to a new PC that I build once I have money and time. Here are specific cards I am considering:

Asus GeForce GTX 750ti: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121855

Gigabyte 2GB GeForce GTX 750ti http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125502

EVGA GeForce GTX 950 FTW Model:

Asus GeForce GTX950:

Should I be looking at a FTW model?

Does this sound like a good plan? Would you suggest any other cards that are around $150? What are some good trusted makers? I have mainly considered EVGA, Asus and Gigabyte. Thank you for your time.

I'm planning on sticking with windows 7 64-bit at the moment. Would this change your mind about the decision? I know it isn't Direct x12 compatable like Windows 10 is. That might be a bad decision when I do finally upgrade my PC and change the MOBO and OS.

Also, I was looking at the GTX 960. Unfortunately I didn't see a Ti version of that either. Do you know of any dates set for GTX 950 Ti or the 960Ti? I couldn't find anything on google just now.

I ended up getting an NVGA GTX 960 FTW edition refurbished from newegg. It was that or the NVGA GTX 950 FTW edition (new). The refurbished 960 was just such a good deal ($150) and was cheaper than the 950 while being better in every respect.

I am a bit nervous about getting a refurbished GPU, but Newegg has a good return policy for them and most forms seem to agree that they've had good experiences with refurbished GPUs from Newegg. If it doesn't work I can just return it or it has a 1year warranty with a 1 year extension from my credit card.

I am currently waiting for it to come to my door!

How was your GTX960FTW? I'd like to do the same with the Dell Studio XSP 435mt but I don't know if my new Corsair 500W power supply will be enought... tnks!

Everything works wonderfully after installation. The only issue I had is that the card is rather big so I had to take out the cards surrounding it (sound card and wireless) to fit it in. After I did that I put them back in. I think my power supply is the 450 watt version. It is also by corsair. I have absolutely no issue and it is the recommended wattage for this card. I am also running an i7 with 12gb G.Skill ram, and I use a lot of midi controllers that run off USB power. Your 500W Corsair will be just fine.

Also the 960 FTW is excellent. I'll always look at refurbished (certified by a reputable company) first now. I went from not being able to play an indie game to running most games at high or ultra 1080p and 30-60fps (depending on game and individual settings).
