I currently have my primary monitor connected via DVI and the secondary monitory via (VGA-to) DVI (adapter). I now tried replacing the DVI cable of my primary monitory with an HDMI cable but the PC won't get the connection somehow.

Is doing this not possible for some reason? Is there something I need to change first? The cable was working fine on my TV, the monitor is new and I don't really have any reason to believe that my PC's HDMI slot is broken either.

OK.. Let me assume you are trying to use a pet rock as a video card. That won't work.
I am also going to assume you are using a wet noodle for a cable.. Oh wait, you did say HDMI... Ok, I can assure you that HDMI cables to not work with pet rocks... THey just are not compatible at all. Nor is DVI and pet rocks.

Now I might have assumed the wrong kinds of devices, so you might need to correct me...

If I make the correct inference that you complain about my post being not precise enough, my graphics card is a sapphire hd 7850. If the monitors are of any importance as well, I'm trying to connect a XL2411Z via HDMI (and some old Samsung is connected via the VGA-to-DVI adapter.

I hope the original post made it clear that both monitors work like a charm when using DVI-cables but the XL2411z fails to establish a connection when I unplug the DVI and use the HDMI cable instead.

No pet rocks involved.
