mobo:ASUS P8P67 rev. 1.02
windows 7 (64)

I'm trying to install windows 7 on a new build from an external usb dvd drive
but it keeps saying "no hard drive is detected"
and I can't get into the bios to change the boot order

You dont really change the boot order in the bios anymore. You press the key that corresponds to 'Select Boot Device' during post (the screen where you are given a chance to enter the bios) and then select the uefi option that matches your install media.

If you aren't give then "Press Del to enter setup" message then you have other problems to resolve first. Try using the motherbd jumper to reset or clear the bios.

thanks popatim. I am actually getting the "Press Del to enter setup" message, when I press delete. it does scan the bus and says "no hard disk is detected" then goes back to the "Press Del to enter setup" message and sticks there.

I'm going to borrow a friends 8gb thumbdrive and try to install from that, but I wonder why it's not seeing the external usb dvd player/recorder? I had a feeling it would do this...

how do I use the motherboard jumper? I do see a few switches on the board I"m not sure what those do yet...

one more question: should I update to the latest bios? I read some bad reviews on this board on amazon. I tend to think the latest bios is always best, but with this board not so sure because I read stories about it catching on fire and stuff which I'd like to avoid. (seems highly unlikely to me).

You should have jumpered connecter on the lower forward part of your motherbd named CLRTC. unplug AC power from your computer and then move the blue jumper from pins 1+2 to 2+3 and leave it there for 15 seconds. Then return the jumper to the 1+2 position. Plug in your AC power and see if you can get into the bios then.

thanks Popatim. I"m still stuck at "please press DEL to enter EFI BIO setting". it tries to scan for drives, but says "no disk drive was detected"...I'm going to try the thumbdrive solution, but I don't see why you can't use a usb dvd drive, seems like there should be a way to do this...thanks again for your help, I love building computers but still learning every time I do it.

Now I have also made a thumbdrive with RUFUS utility, and that's not working either (same issue). I'm not sure I formatted the thumbdrive correctly with rufus and I'm wondering if my ISO is the issue as well..

It's just not seeing a hard drive no matter which usb port I use, no matter if I use a usb dvd drive or the thumbdrive..

are these the correct settings I need to use for RUFUS to setup the thumbdrive? I used:

MBR partition scheme for BIOS or UEFI-CSM
and
NTFS (file system)

I think I might need to get the right ISO file, I have tried 2 windows 7 64 bit installer disks (so far). One home edition one pro edition. Then with powerISO I made the iso files (with UDF selected in disk properties)

maybe it's an issue with my USB3 thumbdrive and I should have bought a usb2 (I really doubt that is the issue)..I'm running low on ideas...

I'm shopping for a better board, this one seems problematic for lots of folks. I'm leaning towards an ASROCK board which are always great for me, but which asrock is best for a 3d rendering SLI rig? I want to put 2 fat graphics cards in there both pciEx16 I guess for 3d rendering and gaming a little

which asrock mobo is most beloved by the extreme SLI-heads running dual graphics cards in tandem, I've never ran 2 heavy weight graphics cards at the same time before in a rig. I already got the ATI Radeon HD 5970 2 GB GDDR5 PCI Express x16 I'm thinking about getting another one to match that one, hope I got a good graphics card because it was used and it does seem to get quite hot...2 of those is going to be an oven in there...
