GTA V Frame drops to 30fps. Is there any way to fix this?

SPECS: 980 Ti, i5 6600K, 500GB 850 EVO SSD
I've been playing GTA V on max settings and have been noticing some serious frame drops. It happens spontaneously. Sometimes I'll just look in a random direction and the fps will drop from around 80 all the way down to 30, and then over the next few seconds it will either climb up to 80 or stay at 30 for a minute or so. If it climbs up and then I look in that same direction, the frame rate no longer drops.

What makes me think this is some weird game issue is that the fps ALWAYS goes down to 30, never lower than that. I'm also maybe slightly worried this could be a hardware problem because at max settings on Crysis 3 I get around 30-45fps on Crysis 3.

I doubt it is a hardware issue, as most games (other than these two) run excellently.

Is there a solution to this problem without waiting for some new drivers or a patch for the game? Is there even a patch to fix this (I couldn't really find any info on it looking online)?

I think your CPU is a bottleneck. It can't compete with the speed of a 980ti. Try overclocking. It's a K version, so it's definitely worth a try.

Your CPU has 14 Nanometer architecture so don't go over 1.30 Vcore. Also make sure your PSU is trustworthy.

Run GPUz and log your sensor data. Make a note of the time when your fps drops to 30, and see if anything in GPUz correlates with the sudden drop (e.g. 100% VRAM, overheating components etc). Could also easily be a VSync issue though - try turning that off and see if it stops happening; if so you need to lower settings to maintain higher levels.

I just did what you said (and also monitored CPU usage as well) and the GPU had a max temp of 70C, usage didn't ever go about 87% for GPU usage, power usage never went above 80%. The CPU usage also never went above 80%. The stuttering issue happened 3 times, and during all of those times the usage on about everything lowered to as low as 60%.

My PSU is a gold 850 Watt EVGA, so that shouldn't be an issue. I've never heard of an i5 being a bottleneck, especially a latest version like mine. I don't think that is the problem (as other games work great) overclocking hasn't really helped..

Also, I don't know if I made this clear but the FPS drop is always to EXACTLY 30.. It's never went below 30. I feel that if that this was a hardware issue, it would be a bit more varying than that (e.g. 30-29-32-24-45-47-60 etc). Mine never really varies, it drops in seemingly the same pattern to the same fps and then climbs back up the same way.

I find it really funny no one ever mentions this, but GTA V uses double buffering vsync by default. To fix this you go to your graphic settings and disable vsync, and then re-enable it. This will turn on triple buffered vsync and you won't drop to 30 anymore. You'll still get the fps drops in those areas, but not all the way down to 30fps. Hope this helps.

Well if you had actually bothered to read the answers (i.e. the very 1st answer!) you will see I did specifically mention VSync being a possible culprit, and recommended disabling it altogether to see if the issue persisted. Which apparently it does.

The problem was not vsync. It actually WAS a CPU bottleneck, due to the high-res shadows and extended shadows distance and all those advanced settings being turned on. Vsync had nothing to do with it.

Turning off the advanced settings gives me a solid 80-100fps with no drops whatsoever.

Well you wouldn't notice double buffered v-sync drops if your pushing more than 60 fps at all times anyway. Running the game with all advanced settings turned on will bring any rig to it's knees. And if you don't mind running the game without v-sync, good for you. Nothing in this thread mentioned triple buffering. That is what I was pointing at. Some people can't be helped though.
