Hey guys, I have been overclocking my i7 for a couple of days now, scared to go beyond 5ghz, im at it now, stable but the load temps are in the 90s with the H100i on max. It reached around the 70s while playing GTA5 which greatly got affected by the OC and ran fantastic.
I can upgrade to H100iGTX for free, do you think i will get better temps with it or should i go custom loop's direction. I think i have a good chip and i really wanna see how far i can go with it, but with keeping the temps in the 70s at max.

Thanks
D

if you're happy with 4.8 then that would be good as you'll have better temps. yes, we know the feeling :), hitting the number that you want. and a flat 5ghz at that.
or maybe get 5, do some bench, get the numbers then tone it down :)

For 5+ you're already out of the territory normally covered by closed loop cooling. About the only worthwhile closed loop upgrade would be a H110i GTX, but if you're really set on finding the true max for that chip you'd have to go custom loop, because I sincerely doubt that going from a H100i to H110i GTX will bring you down from 90 to 70. That said, if you can upgrade to a H100i GTX for free, that's probably worthwhile. I don't think it cools any better, but it should be quieter under full load.

question is, will you keep the 5ghz? or lower it a bit after reaching stability?
if so, are you comfortable with the noise coming from the fans or are you willing to spend for a cooler just to keep the 5ghz at relatively lower temp than what you have?

just a personal opinion, test the 5ghz on your most played games, see how well it helps. then try lowering it, maybe 4.7 or 4.5, test with the same set of games. then choose, will you keep the 5ghz with higher temp and noisier fans? or is 4.5-4.7 enough for your games?

just an opinion of course

Thanks for the reply mate. Unfortunately H110i GTX isn't available where i live so i have to make do with the H100iGTX, even if i get a custom loop, i will have to import everything, right to the tubing. Will the custom loop with 360mm rad just for the cpu get me lower temps?

Hey, thanks for the reply.
The noise isn't really a factor because my computer is kinda far away from me and i game on my TV with a 5.1 Sony HT setup, i get super immersed. Thanks for the advice tho, ill get to testing the games at 4.8, which i got at 1.2v and the temps were just fine. Its my first time reaching 5ghz so i think im getting over excited about the whole thing :p
Thanks again, ill get back with the results soon.

between 4,5 and 5GHz the diminishing returns kick in. And for daily use the issues with heat, power and stability kick in. Personally i would be happy that my chip reached 5GHz and after that i would tune it down to 4,5, there is no real benefit, just a number :D

For another angle, you've got a pretty nice chip there, so you should be able to set your OC to 4.6 or so, then tune your vcore down to a very low value before it becomes unstable again. You'll have a very fast, cool and quiet system that will last a very long time and keep your power bills low. There are not many games that will actually see a FPS boost between a 4.6 OC and a 5.0.

To answer your other question, though, you could absolutely get lower temps with a 360 custom loop, or a 280 custom loop, and probably even a 240 custom loop compared to the H100i. More so if you went with a few radiators. If you read up on custom water cooling, you'll see guys who overclock the heck out of their CPU and have mid-40's under load. That's a lot of time and money for numbers that don't actually benefit you in a tangible way (for the most part).

Haha, makes absolute sense. Thanks a lot, clocking down to 4.8 and living in peace =P

Thanks for the insightful reply man, don't think ill go the custom loop route, too expensive, will just get my free H100i GTX upgrade and shut up about it =P. And clock mine to 4.8 with the least required vcore value. Cheers.
