Hello,

Hope everyone is doing better than I am. I am having an issue. I have connected my Arris SURFboard SB6141 Modem to the Coax cable (from outside) and have taken the ethernet cord from the modem and connected it into the unmanaged TRENDnet 16 port switch. My house was prewired and I just bought this switch so that we can have wired internet in whatever room there is an ethernet connection. All the connections seem to work when I connect my laptop with the ethernet cord.

Now I am working on a wireless network so our iPhones and tablets and my laptop can get a wifi signal and I wont be stuck with a wire. When I connect my Linksys E3000 router to the ethernet connection in the wall that goes up to the attic and connects to the TRENDnet switch, the wireless router wont get any internet at all. I tried connecting both my laptop and iPhone to the wireless network and no internet! I then connected the ethernet cable to my LAN port in the wireless router (before I was using the WAN port) and still no wireless internet connection for my laptop or iPhones. I was however able to connect my laptop to the other LAN ports in the wireless router and it connected to the internet just fine but for some reason the wireless wont connect. Help me! I feel as if I am so close but so far away! What am I doing wrong????

Thanks in advance!

The way you are connecting things requires using your modem as a router. They don't always work well as routers. Often, your modem may only give out a single IP address. Whatever you plug in first after turning on your modem will connect to the internet and then nothing else will.

The easiest fix is to run the ethernet from your modem to the WAN port of the E3000. Then connect a LAN port of the E3000 to your switch. This will allow your E3000 to act as a router (which it was designed for). Anything that plugs into the switch or connects via wifi will then get an IP and have access to the internet. If you want wifi somewhere else, then you should purchase a second wifi router or access point.

Ok I will try that in a bit and post a response. One question though: after I try your suggested method and I needed more Wifi coverage, could I purchase another Wifi router and connect it to one of the ethernet ports in the wall which run directly into the TRENDnet 16 port switch up in the attic? Would that allow the router to get an internet connection and essentially increase my wifi coverage?

That is correct. Just make sure you disable DHCP on the new wifi router and plug the ethernet into a LAN port.

I tried out what you had suggested and everything works great! Thankfully the E3000 covers my home pretty well but not great. I think my next challenge is when I hook up the 2nd router to the ethernet plug in the wall and try to disable DHCP. I am not the best at adjusting the settings in the router admin page. But thank you for your help though!!! I appreciate it. Cheers.
