I do software development, database administration... you get the idea. Multiple monitors are bread and butter for me. However, when looking into gaming on multiple monitors I'm overwhelmed by conflicting information, out of date posts, and troublesome reviews of technology that's supposed to solve this but doesn't. I don't know who's right in all this.

Tom's hardware has been a mainstay for me since I was in college. My hope with this post will be to provide an up to date resource that is easy to consume for those of us not deep diving in recent hardware.

Goal
Game on three monitors on higher/ultra settings using a single video card and three identical 23/24" or 27/28" monitors. The experience should not have any screen tearing or other distracting issues. I'm looking for best practices, for best experience, not duct tape fixes here.

If possible, I'd like this to be in a reasonable budget realm so it can be used by others as a quick reference. Reasonable budget realm for this kind of project is Video card (under $500), Monitors (under $350 each). Feel free to add more expensive solutions as well.

Recommendations sought

  • ■ Recommended Video Card + Monitors to use (23/24") with any adapters (pros and cons)
    ■ Recommended Video Card + Monitors to use (27/28") with any adapters (pros and cons)
    ■ Eyefinity is supposed to make this experience fantastic for AMD users. Truth here?
    ■ I currently have an R9 290 video card. Can that be used here?
I truly appreciate any helpful knowledge shared here. THANK YOU!

Solution
Your 290 can definately be used. But for massive resolutions set of tri-monitor gaming you would likely want the 390 as it provides more VRAM. In my experience the absolute best way on the AMD side is daisy-chaining display port monitors, if possible with freesync to avoid tearing. Ill look around and see if I can find any for you. *Warning* Very expensive...
