KB+M Not working

Hey guys,

Just finished building by new Z170 Skylake system. All boots fine and can easily get into the BIOS.

My problem is, as soon as the system hands over to my Windows 7 installation disk, I lose all control over my keyboard and mouse. All lights go off and nothing responds.

They both work absolutely fine in the BIOS.

SPECS:
- Motherboard: MSI Z170A Krait Gaming ATX
- CPU: Intel i5-6600k @ stock
- RAM: 8GB (2x4GB) DDR4
- PSU: EVGA Supernova GS 550
- GPU: EVGA GTX 970 SC

The BIOS options give me the following:

- USB Controller: On/Off
- XHCI hand-off: On/Off
- Legacy USB support: On/Off/Auto

Things I've tried:

- Turning off Legacy USB support, effect: Nothing
- Turning off XHCI hand-off, effect: KB+M lights remain on and powered, but dont respond
- Using an old PS/2 keyboard, effect: Works fine, can even complete the Windows 7 installation, but without a PS/2 mouse, I can't download any drivers so just get stuck again.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Get a USB to PS/2 adapter and see if that works.

I have this same problem from time to time. I literally just unplug the KB+M and try different USB ports when this happens. It seems to work for me if I move them around. I have had one time when I had to try several USB ports before it registered the device. Why this happens I do not know. All the USB ports work fine after that.

Have you tried this? while the system is sitting there and the KB+M is unresponsive try unplugging them both and placing them in different USB ports.

Fixed it, turns out that deep in the BIOS is a XHCI Windows 7 installation setting that needs to be enabled for USB devices to work.

Why MSI decided not to include this setting in the USB section I dont know..

Cheers for the suggestions anyway guys!
