So I'm building a PC and I would use it for gaming (mainly) but I would also use it for YouTube (recording and editing). Also schoolwork means a lot to me so I need something I can write word documents, powerpoints etc. I already know that windows has all of these. But I also prefer the UI of steamOS. My question is, does the steamOS have the same features as windows. Furthermore, is there any PC builds that have steamOS pre-installed so that I don't have to spend a pointless 75 quid?

Solution
SteamOS can only play Linux steam games, and maybe run linux applications.
After trying to use Linux for an hour you'd gladly spend 150 quid for windows.

If you are building a PC then you don't need to spend a pointless 75 quid. I would install Linux rather than SteamOS (yes, I know that SteamOS is a form of Linux, but it is a very specialized one with poor support compared to other distributions).

You can't write Word documents or PowerPoint presentations, but OpenOffice provides very similar facilities. As you seem somewhat vague about what Linux/SteamOS actually is I would suggest that you do more research (there is plenty of information online) before commiting too heavily to it. On the other hand, it's free so it costs nothing to try it. I won't go into the arguments here about whether it is an adequate replacement for Windows when it comes to gaming as this has been gone over so many times on these forums. But check that the games that you want to run do run under Linux.
