The HD7000 series has aged very well-performance seems to just keep improving. The 7990 will give the higher framerates most of the time, but it may not look as good due to the internal crossfire it uses which can cause inconsistency in frame pacing.

This should be true, but it really isn't. AMD is still selling GPUs based on chips with pretty much identical technology. The chip is two generations old, but when you throw two of those chips together like on the 7990, it really does compete favorably with a single 1 gen old chip that was never even top-of-the-line.
