USB Network adapter problems

Hey guys, I've alreadg posted 2 threads about this topic and it only had one good reply, but I wanted to get more answers (I did post it at like 2 am so it might explain why). Anyways, I have a Netgear n600 WNDA3100v2 Wi-Fi Adapter that is hooked up to the motherboard ports on my MSI h81m-e33 motherboard that is inside a Corsair 100r case. The Network adapter and the PC are in a room that's directly above where our ASUS RT-AC68R router is placed. The adapter is a dual band n adapter and the router is a dual band AC router.

I have been having around 10 Mbps download speeds and can barely go from one site to another without waiting a good 20 seconds for it to load or to not just load at all. The Netgear genie however says that it's at around the 100 Mbps or atleast the 50 Mbps, but it's either lying or I'm blind. I have a laptop in the same room that outperforms my desktop's speeds by what it feels like 10 times even though it has waaaay inferior specs and all other devices IN THE WHOLE HOUSE works flawlessly but mine.

I've been doing a lot of research for the past 2 days regarding the topic, but non of them had work. I tried moving the USB devices around in the back so that the adapter is the most freed up device at the very top. I've tried downloading the latest drivers and it still had no drastic improvement. The only thing I haven't tried is the USB extension cable method, which I can't do because I'm trying to find the extension cable that came with the box since we bought it 2-3 years ago (I'll report back if I find it). I have a question about that as well, around what distance should the wireless adapter he away from the case since from what I've read is the cause of my problem, but I'm not entirely sure?

I've thought of everything. I can't do a wired ethernet connection since I don't have ethernet jack in my room. I can't use the front USB ports since I had some compatibility issues with the motherboard and the case. I can't move the PC because the only other place I could put it is the basement, which has waaay more space than my room, but is the same distance from my router to the room that the PC is right now and if it's the case that's really causing it, then I don't want to remove everything and bring everything over there and waste my time. I just don't know what to do.

*Update 8/28/15 4:17 p.m:

I have found the elusive USB extension cable that came with the adapter and it was literally in plain sight! I am gladly to report that download speeds have dramatically improved and I am getting the performance I was expecting. If you are also having trouble with this, I HIGHLY recommend a USB extension cable. It doesn't even have to be a long 15 foot cable, it could be just be a 3 feet or 5 feet cable. As long as the adapter is away from the adapter for I would say at least 1 foot away.

First of all, USB wifi adapters are not that good. limited in size and power output due to usb limited power and port size.

A USB extension cable could help if your PC case is blocking signal. There is no magic length number, it Is just about getting the wireless adapter far enough away from obstacles so that only the floor/walls is what is in between the wifi adapter and the router.

Also if your computer is literally right above your wifi router that will cause low signal. Wireless signals on a Omni-directional antenna are shaped like a doughnut (with a much smaller hole in the middle). The space right above and bellow the antenna is referred to as "the cone of silence" because there is limited signal right there.

If the extension cable does not work then I would just ditch the wifi and get a powerline networking adapter kit (you need 2 adapters, one for the router and one for your PC). The tp-link av500 kit can be found for around $30-40 and will give you 80-100 mbps real speed.

Thanks for the reply! About the "cone of silence", I don't think that's the cause since I've been placing the laptop where the PC is now for the past 2 years and it has worked perfectly. I really can't afford a powerline network adapter right now and I also don't have a ethernet jack in my room. I will be looking into it though, but in the near future, say for the next 2 months, I don't think I can afford that since I'm just a high school student.
