Hello
First sorry for my bad english.I am new to this site. Also I am new in PC building so I am hoping for some help.I am building my first PC.I will use it mainly for games and sometimes for watching movies, music and internet.I am really wondering which processor to choose.I am wondering between i5 4690 and Xeon E3 1231v3.Which one is better for gaming?I do not want to overclock. You can make your own suggestions for other processor that will work good too.If is needed i will tell you the other parts of my configuration.
Thank you.

They are about the same performance wise, usually the xeon is used as a server cpu, but is just fine for this purpose and also also has hyperthreading capabilities, which may help you out in some current games, and those to come. I would recommend the XEON if they are priced similar, currently.

Generally for gaming the i5 4460 is plenty. The 4690 is just clocked a little higher and the E3 1231 v3 has HT and no iGPU, so generally the i5 4460 will be good enough for 90-95% of situations that the 4690/E3 1231 do better in. So depending on your other parts for "gaming", I would opt for the i5 4460 and use the extra $ (~$50-70) for upgrading the GPU. Also you could use a bit cheaper Mobo (~$60-80 price range) with the i5 4460 (you could use the same mobo for either CPU that you selected also, just a thought). The B85/H97 are good options for any/all of the CPU options that are listed (you just have to make sure there isn't any BIOS updates needed to run the Haswell refresh CPU's).

thing is if hyper threading stuff were to come into play these where the xeon may pay off ?? I did a i5 and look back now and wish I went xeon [as a after thought ] I do find a few thing where the xeon may of been the thing to have ?? plus as said I prefer the graphis card and really don't care for the igp

too bad intel did not make 1150 'k' xeons that would be sweet

Well your situation might not be the same as the OP. Yes the Xeon with HT is a nice option, but if gaming is the primary concern then the i5 w/no HT is going to usually do the same as the Xeon system (assuming your using the same dGPU). I'm just giving the OP some options to consider, if gaming is the primary reason for the build. If HT is of concern (most people don't really need it) then the Xeon is going to be the best option, if having a bit lesser GPU isn't of too much concern.

To sum up the considerations:
* i5 w/better GPU if gaming is the primary concern.
* Xeon w/HT and lesser GPU if HT is going to be used.

The 2 considerations above are assuming your allocating a similar budget for the 2 parts (CPU & GPU). If the budget is a little more flexible, then the Xeon w/the same GPU on the i5 build would be a better option.

For what I can use hyperthreading?I will stick with GTX 970 G1.So,the questions is what CPU to choose.I have the money to buy any of them but do not know which one will be better for games.I will use my PC mainly for games.I will not use it for work. The programs that I may use on my PC will be Microsoft Office or something like that. Not video editing, rendering or something like this things.

The BIOS is basically the operating system of the Mobo. If it comes with an older version, you would have to update it first in order to run/recognize the newer Haswell CPU's. It looks like the Xeon/i5 4460 need the F3 BIOS version to operate/recognize the 2 CPU's. This version of BIOS isn't the newest needed to run those 2 CPU's, so more than likely you wouldn't need to update to BIOS.

As far as the GPU is concerned, you should be able to play 1080p/1440p pretty good with that option. So it comes down to which CPU you want to get.

The option I would opt for, if gaming is of concerned and you can afford the difference is:

* CPU i5 4460 and GTX 980.
* CPU Xeon and GTX 970.

The i5 option above will perform better in gaming and only cost about $50 more (depending on where you get your parts from). If you want a bit more CPU power I would opt for the Xeon and the GTX 970. It is up to you on what you want to do, but either option will still give you a good system.

If $ isn't too much of an issue, which it seems it isn't, then the Xeon is the one to get over the 4690, IMHO. If you don't mind not having the iGPU (only would be used if you needed to send in your 970 for an RMA or dies on you) then the Xeon is the one to get.

I would think that should work fine and dandy - just remember the i5 is like a i7 with out hyper threading - xeon is like a locked i7 with out igp - ''K'' chips are unlocked for overclocking and best to use if running memory over 1600 speed - [haswell memory controller is native 1600 memory over 1600 is considered overcloked and you may need to bump the chip up to get stable ]

I don't see any prob's with that 4690 and a gtx 980 --

matter of fact I was looking to put a 980ti on a 4670 build
