Hi guys my setup is
750w corsair psu
8gb ddr3 xms3
Asus m5 78 l Le
Phenom x4 965 be
R9 280x 3gb ddr5
128gb ssd
720gb seagate

I am thinking of upgrading my cpu but do I move to Intel? I mainly game on my pc so is the i7 worth me buying a new motherboard and cpu or just get the fx-8350.

Solution
You're probably not going to see enough difference from a 965 BE to an FX-8350 to justify spending the money. You'd see some improvement with the newer Intel CPUs, but the cost would be higher because of the motherboard, and if you have OEM Windows, that means you'd probably have to fork over $100 for a new copy then, too. So that wouldn't be worth it either.

Honestly, you're in one of those weird in-between situations where it looks like your current CPU is just barely good enough, but upgrading is going to be cost-prohibitive for the gains you'd get. I'd overclock it as far as it'll go and try to get another 12 months or so out of it, then see if there's anything compelling enough on the market to justify a full switch.

Your X4-965 is a surprisingly good gamer.
Few games use more than 2-3 cores so the extra cores of a FX-8 or even a I7 are not that helpful.
Faster individual core speed is more important for the gamer.

I would look today for a I5-6600K and a Z170 motherboard using DDR4 ram if you can fit that into your budget.

no spells no -- think with amd fx your buying the past today its now like a 6 year old platform ?? ya -it cost less but ....

after my fx experience I just had to jump the amd ship first time in 15 years - I just could not see investing another dime in that mess [opinion] seemd my older 939 worked out better ?

so I went intel and cant say it was a wrong move .. not being a intel guy at the time the only thing I wish I had changed my mind on was going with a xeon or i7 over this i5 ???? not to say the i5 [4670] is bad but I feel I now see where the hyper threading can come into play in a few things .

but overall I'm better satisfied with the z87/4670 I ended up with then I ever was with amd fx [more opinion]

also all the parts except the cpu and the board were reused and things were a lot better , a lot
